Causes of Commercial Fires

2/22/2022 (Permalink)

Commercial fire can be devastating, harming both human and property.  Every year, there are as many as 75,000 commercial building fires in the United States.  U.S. fire departments responded to about 3,300 office property fires per year.  These fires caused an annual average of 85 civilian deaths, 1,325 civilian fire injuries and $3.2 billion in direct property damage, according to the (NFPA) National Fire Prevention Association.  Though some are small and cause relatively little harm, many others pose a great risk to life and property.   Fortunately, many fires can be prevented if you’re aware of the potential hazards. Here are several of the most common causes of commercial building fires.

Human Error

Many commercial fires can be attributed to human error and are not meant to be malicious. For example, spilling liquids on electrical equipment, leaving a coffee pot on, or burning food in the kitchen can easily cause a fire to break out. To decrease the chances of this happening in your commercial building, perform risk assessments to determine if any changes need to be implemented, provide proper staff training, and ensure fire extinguishers are easily accessible throughout the building.

Negligence

Negligence fires are the result of someone not following proper procedures and can usually be easily avoided by proper staff training. For example, storing or handling flammable items improperly or covering electrical equipment that must have air can result in a fire that causes significant commercial fire damage.

Arson

Unfortunately, arson is a frequent cause of commercial fires, particularly in industrial buildings and factories. This may be an act of vandalism, an attempt to collect insurance money or even the work of an unhappy employee. To minimize the damage associated with arson, you may want to consider installing an automatic sprinkler system.

Faulty Wiring/ Electrics

Electrical issues are another frequent cause of commercial fires. For example, outdated equipment, loose or frayed wires, and overloaded plugins can spark a fire with little to no advance warning. This is why it is so important to make certain your electrical equipment, including boilers, hot water heaters, and furnaces are in good working order and able to handle their workload. To ensure your equipment/ appliances are functioning properly, you may want to invest in a portable appliance tester (PAT).

SERVPRO of Napa County can respond immediately to your commercial fire damage emergency regardless of the size or scope of the damage. Whether your fire emergency occurs in a restaurant, motel or office building, we will respond quickly to mitigate the damage and manage the restoration project through to its completion.

Insurance To Help Protect Your Business From Water Damage

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Your commercial property insurance won’t cover every type of water damage claim. For example, if your business property gets damaged from flooding, your commercial property coverage likely won’t help. That’s why it’s a good idea to get different types of insurance to help protect your commercial building from water damage.

  • Commercial property insurance helps protect your owned or rented building and equipment you use to run your business. This policy helps cover claims of water damage due to leaks or burst pipes.
  • Commercial flood insurance helps protect your business from natural disasters that can cause flood water and damage. You’ll want to get this separate insurance policy if your business is in a location that’s at higher risk of flooding.
  • Business income insurance can replace your lost income if you can’t open because of covered property damage. For example, if a pipe leaks in your ceiling and causes mold growth, you may have to shut down for water damage and clean up. This coverage can help pay your ongoing expenses, like rent, utility bills and payroll until they restore services to your business.

Commercial Loss

12/23/2021 (Permalink)

When dealing with a commercial loss, it is important to remediate the problem immediately. Your business might be in jeopardy if you do not take immediate action when dealing with large commercial loses. Commercial buildings, like any building, tend to occur damages overtime; things start to wear away, like caulking near the joints of windows and doors. Cracks in the siding become large and now you are dealing with water intrusion. Depending on where you are at in the United States, damages can come from storm, hurricanes, hail , heavy rain and often flooding being the biggest concern. According to the National Geographic,  floods cost homeowners and business owners nearly 6 Billion in loses annually. Below are a few tips to help prevent flood damages to your commercial property.

  1. Inspect your basement frequently in the event of a storm. Basements are the lowest point, which in turn is the most likely place you will see flood damages. Re-caulk all seams along windows, doors, baseboards where the foundation meets the soleplate . Install a Commercial grade sump pump in the lowest area of your basement, with the discharge pipe ran out of the commercial property.
  2. Improve your landscape and design a system to utilize the foliage and run offs to your advantage. Install French drains where necessary to properly direct the flow of the excess rain . It is extremely important to divert all water away from your foundation.
  3. Assess your property frequently, walk around and take notes on the damages you see. If you see discoloration near or on light fixtures, then typically that means the O-ring has failed and needs to be replaced. Check for any soft spots in your walls , as that would indicate there is a buildup of moisture or gray water has damaged the wall significantly . Be proactive ; do not wait for the storm to come and cause damages, it is better to find your vulnerabilities before the storm hits.

Commercial Storm Damage Restoration in Napa County

12/28/2020 (Permalink)

Mother Nature can strike at anytime and at any place.  When a severe storm blows through, it can bring with it heavy rain, flooding, high winds, lightning, hail, and even tornadoes.  The damage that storms can inflict on buildings will vary depending on the type and severity of the storm.  Some of the potential kinds of damage that different storms can cause are cracked or shattered windows, roof damage from hail, damage from fallen branches/trees or even water damage from flooding.   If that damage isn’t repaired quickly, interior damage, mold, and damage to equipment and inventory can follow - not to mention the disruption caused for your employees and customers.  The costs of repairs to commercial buildings in particular are likely to be substantial due to the high concentration of glass used in these structures. Without the full and timely payment of insurance benefits, rebuilding and repairing can be prohibitively expensive.

SERVPRO of Napa County understands that severe weather can happen without notice and cause water damage to your commercial property.  As a trusted restoration company, we’re dedicated to responding immediately to water and storm damage emergencies.  We have the experience and advanced training that enables us to restore your property quickly. Our cleanup procedure generally includes the cleaning of porous and non-porous surfaces, disinfecting of non-porous surfaces, cleaning and disinfecting of equipment or tools. 5 Workplace Safety Tips for Small Businesses

2/24/2020 (Permalink)

Small businesses, especially start-ups need to make sure that before operations occur, safety should be of upmost importance. Although this may seem like a given, there are instances when businesses do not follow certain requirements set by OSHA, get an employee injured and set themselves up the legal repercussions.  Therefore, here are 5 steps that we take here at SERVPRO of Sonoma/Napa that can protect you and avoid most accidents in the workplace.

Easy Access to your Safety Rules

Every job site or office needs to make their rules visible or easily accessible by their employees instead of just containing them within a rule book. This can work as a friendly reminder for your team members in case a situation arises.

Make Employees Involved

If you give a damn, your employees will too. Make sure that you are sincere and mindful of your employee needs and that their safety is not just for your protection but because you would not want any accident to befall them.

Communication

Although it is important to effectively communicate safety rules. It is even more important to emphasis that other employees should communicate quickly if they see something potentially unsafe or a hostile work environment. Communication is key!

Avoid Making Shortcuts

Getting things done quickly may look attractive with productivity, however, these conditions and work environment can increase the likelihood of workplace injuries. Therefore, productivity should not be at the expense of your employees.

Practice an Emergency Ready Plan

Make sure you have a plan for your employees that follows federal protocol about any situation that might arise. In the event of a natural disaster, contact your local SERVPRO and we can get you started on one of our own Emergency Ready Profiles (ERP). This complimentary plan would be easily accessible through an app on your mobile device that would contain the necessary information in the event of a disaster.

Safety should be the priority of every business. Prevention is key, and we have your back.

The Restoration of an Educational Facility

2/3/2020 (Permalink)

Cardboard boxes with the SERVPRO logo in the center of the room are stacked in 4 rows in a library. A school needed our help and we came in with the equipment needed to get the job done.

Recently, we were contacted by a school that needed our services due to a minor flood that damaged a huge portion of their floor. We came in and inspected the damage and found that although there were many rooms that were affected, we had the tools and resources to get the job done quickly and efficiently so that we could make it look, “Like it never even happened.” To get this done we sent in our best team to investigate the flooring, check for mold, and begin the drying process using our specialized equipment. After drying, we use a device to check for any moisture or mold again to make sure that no additional damage would ensue.

We use scientific drying principles and provide validation and documentation that your property is dry and the job is complete.

There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, and insulation. When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed. It is impossible to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment. However, mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling moisture indoors.
