Water and Fire Damage

4/7/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage carries the same problems as fire and it is just as destructive as fire damage. Water and fire damage share one thing in common; it is a problem no one wants and it is usually during the most inconvenient times. Water damage is a destructive process that can cause mold growth, swelling of wood and even in some instances degrade the structural integrity. Determining loss can be tricky as sometimes tile, baseboards, and subfloors might not exhibit any damages.

However, with the help of equipment such as probes and moisture meters, it allows for SERVPRO of Napa County to determine the extent of the damages. After identifying the extent of the damages SERVPRO is able to mobilize highly skilled Technicians and industry leading equipment to your property in a moments notice.

Water Damage Cleanup in a Home

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

When a water emergency occurs in your home or business, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  1. Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  2. Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  3. Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  4. Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.

SEVERITY OF FIRE DAMAGE

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

The severity of the fire situation greatly impacts the extent of damage. This can range from minor smoke and soot contained to just a portion of the home, to extensive structural damage that must be rebuilt. Once your home or business is deemed safe for entry, SERVPRO of Napa County technicians will inspect and assess the level of damage to help determine the plan of action. We will categorize your fire damage upon inspection into one of three categories.

  • Minor Fire Damage – Light to moderate smoke and soot was contained to just a portion of the building. Restoration needs include dry or wet cleaning and deodorization to walls, ceiling, floor and personal property, with little or no repainting. Very few items need replaced.
  • Medium Fire Damage – Moderate smoke and soot requiring more aggressive cleaning and deodorization techniques to remove residue. More areas need repainting. Heat has caused more extensive damage to surfaces and materials which may require more items to need repair or replacement.
  • Major Fire Damage – Severe fire damage to contents, finished surfaces and even structural framing. Smoke has infiltrated the majority of the building, and emergency intervention like board-up of windows and doors, or roof tarping, is required right away. Personal property items will likely need to be moved out of the structure for cleaning off-site. All remaining surfaces will be cleaned and deodorized in preparation for painting and repairs.

The Source Of The Fire

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

Not all fires result in the same level of damage. The extent of fire damage varies greatly depending on a number of factors, including:

  • The source of the fire.
  • How hot the fire got, and the amount of smoke created.
  • How long the fire raged before intervention or firefighters stopped it.
  • The amount of water or substance needed to extinguish the fire.

Prepare for Spring Storm

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

Are you prepared for the losses that could occur in your home? If you are a business owner, have you taken precautions to help keep your employees from being at risk? Taking that one step further, are you prepared so you don't have to shut down your business for a few days, weeks or even possibly permanently?

Purchase a generator. This may seem like a frivolous expense, but it can be used for so many different disasters. When there is a severe hurricane or tornado, you could be without power for weeks. Think of all the items in your house that require electricity: appliances, electronics, power tools, lights and heaters. Imagine not having a refrigerator or television for more than a couple hours. Now think of how your life will be if you are without them for days or even longer.

Other items to consider when preparing your residence for the spring storm season:

  • Talk to your family about your Take Cover and Fire Escape plans. Be sure to include even the youngest child. Talking about it when calm and not "in the moment" will give them a sense of security. Assign someone the responsibility of the family pet.
  • Review your personal property, or home, inventory to ensure that all recently purchased items have been added. If they haven't, contact your inventory service provider to update your file.
  • Call our insurance agent if you have made any major updates to your home in the past year. The worst time to find you are underinsured is when you're filing a claim.
  • Inspect the exterior of your home and tack down any loose shingles, shutters or siding.
  • Look at all of your trees and shrubs. Cut back any branches that are up against the house. Cut off or trim branches of trees that could fall on power lines.
  • When you are facing a storm that requires extra reinforcement, purchase the supplies appropriate for your geographic area and the type of storm you are facing.

Home owner or business owner - or both - being prepared before the storm is bearing down will help you in many ways. You'll be at ease financially, emotionally and have a comfort level from knowing that you're ready.

Causes of Commercial Fires

2/22/2022 (Permalink)

Commercial fire can be devastating, harming both human and property.  Every year, there are as many as 75,000 commercial building fires in the United States.  U.S. fire departments responded to about 3,300 office property fires per year.  These fires caused an annual average of 85 civilian deaths, 1,325 civilian fire injuries and $3.2 billion in direct property damage, according to the (NFPA) National Fire Prevention Association.  Though some are small and cause relatively little harm, many others pose a great risk to life and property.   Fortunately, many fires can be prevented if you’re aware of the potential hazards. Here are several of the most common causes of commercial building fires.

Human Error

Many commercial fires can be attributed to human error and are not meant to be malicious. For example, spilling liquids on electrical equipment, leaving a coffee pot on, or burning food in the kitchen can easily cause a fire to break out. To decrease the chances of this happening in your commercial building, perform risk assessments to determine if any changes need to be implemented, provide proper staff training, and ensure fire extinguishers are easily accessible throughout the building.

Negligence

Negligence fires are the result of someone not following proper procedures and can usually be easily avoided by proper staff training. For example, storing or handling flammable items improperly or covering electrical equipment that must have air can result in a fire that causes significant commercial fire damage.

Arson

Unfortunately, arson is a frequent cause of commercial fires, particularly in industrial buildings and factories. This may be an act of vandalism, an attempt to collect insurance money or even the work of an unhappy employee. To minimize the damage associated with arson, you may want to consider installing an automatic sprinkler system.

Faulty Wiring/ Electrics

Electrical issues are another frequent cause of commercial fires. For example, outdated equipment, loose or frayed wires, and overloaded plugins can spark a fire with little to no advance warning. This is why it is so important to make certain your electrical equipment, including boilers, hot water heaters, and furnaces are in good working order and able to handle their workload. To ensure your equipment/ appliances are functioning properly, you may want to invest in a portable appliance tester (PAT).

SERVPRO of Napa County can respond immediately to your commercial fire damage emergency regardless of the size or scope of the damage. Whether your fire emergency occurs in a restaurant, motel or office building, we will respond quickly to mitigate the damage and manage the restoration project through to its completion.

Commercial Storm Damage

2/22/2022 (Permalink)

Mother Nature can strike at anytime and at any place.  When a severe storm blows through, it can bring with it heavy rain, flooding, high winds, lightning, hail, and even tornadoes.  The damage that storms can inflict on buildings will vary depending on the type and severity of the storm.  Some of the potential kinds of damage that different storms can cause are cracked or shattered windows, roof damage from hail, damage from fallen branches/trees or even water damage from flooding.   If that damage isn’t repaired quickly, interior damage, mold, and damage to equipment and inventory can follow - not to mention the disruption caused for your employees and customers.  The costs of repairs to commercial buildings in particular are likely to be substantial due to the high concentration of glass used in these structures. Without the full and timely payment of insurance benefits, rebuilding and repairing can be prohibitively expensive.

SERVPRO of Napa County  understands that severe weather can happen without notice and cause water damage to your commercial property.  As a trusted restoration company, we’re dedicated to responding immediately to water and storm damage emergencies.  We have the experience and advanced training that enables us to restore your property quickly. We use scientific drying principles and provide validation and documentation that your property is dry and the job is complete.

Remember, please call SERVPRO of Napa County at (707)226-2181 if you need assistance with water damage.

Be Prepared Before a Storm

2/15/2022 (Permalink)

Storms are a blessing and curse to Northern California. California lacks consistent precipitation and  due to dry conditions caused by the lack of rainfall, storms can evidently create more problems, such as mudslides, down trees, and downed power lines. Below are a few suggestions to stay safe during a storm.

  1.  Watch for signs of storms and stay up to date with weather apps to track the storms progress in your area
  2. Do the kind thing when safe and check on your neighbors. families with babies, the elderly, and people with disabilities are all at a higher risk due to the nature of their situation.
  3. Take shelter in a sturdy building, preferably away from windows and objects that can fall and trap you such as entertainment centers. Remove all hanging decorations on your porch or deck to minimize the potential for broken windows.
  4. Unplug all major utilities such as stoves, refrigerators, and precious electronics. Telephone lines and metal pipes are conductive, so it is best to unplug anything that is not needed to track the weather.
  5. Assemble an emergency ready kit. This will insure you have some necessary items such as flashlights, emergency contacts, water, and food.  Being prepared always helps in the event of an emergency.

How to Stay Safe Immediately After the Storm

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

After the storm is over, return to your home only after you are cleared to return by authorities. Enter your home with caution.

Check for signs of gas and water leaks and damage to electrical or sewer systems. If you smell gas or hear a blowing or hissing noise, leave immediately, keeping doors and windows open. Call your gas company to report the problem. Stay clear of frayed electrical wires and downed power lines.

Do not drink any tap water or use tap water to prepare food until you have been notified it is safe to do so. Stay tuned in to a local radio station that is reporting status updates and recovery information.

Upon return home, use a camera to take initial photographs of the damage. Make sure you take pictures of any roofing, structural damage, flooding, broken windows or other debris, and make notes of anything that is broken or damaged. When it comes time to file an insurance claim, the pictures you take after the storm can go a long way in helping you recover from the storm, prove your claim is valid and getting approved for repairs as quickly as possible.

Insurance To Help Protect Your Business From Water Damage

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Your commercial property insurance won’t cover every type of water damage claim. For example, if your business property gets damaged from flooding, your commercial property coverage likely won’t help. That’s why it’s a good idea to get different types of insurance to help protect your commercial building from water damage.

  • Commercial property insurance helps protect your owned or rented building and equipment you use to run your business. This policy helps cover claims of water damage due to leaks or burst pipes.
  • Commercial flood insurance helps protect your business from natural disasters that can cause flood water and damage. You’ll want to get this separate insurance policy if your business is in a location that’s at higher risk of flooding.
  • Business income insurance can replace your lost income if you can’t open because of covered property damage. For example, if a pipe leaks in your ceiling and causes mold growth, you may have to shut down for water damage and clean up. This coverage can help pay your ongoing expenses, like rent, utility bills and payroll until they restore services to your business.

Ways to Protect Your Home Before a Storm

12/23/2021 (Permalink)

1. Reduce flying debris

If you see any tree branches near or hanging over your structure, the best solution may be to cut them off. You can also secure weak and loose fencing and anchor any heavy objects around your yard into the ground.

2. Replacing windows and exterior doors

If possible, consider replacing your windows and outside doors with pressure and impact resistance improvements so that you can have better protection from the outside force of a storm.

3. Inspect and repair your roof

Inspect your roof and overhang to look for signs of wear or damage. This is crucial to prevent water from entering through the cracks and damages your ceilings, causing mold.

4. Check caulking

Make sure the caulking around your windows and doors are in good shape and not cracked or broken. If there are any gaps, make sure to get a caulk gun to fill up holes around pipes or wires that enter your building. This will reduce the risk of leaks from wind-driven rain.

5. Inspect carports and other attached structures

Have porches, carports, entryway canopies, and storage sheds inspected to make sure they are firmly attached and in good condition.

6. Create an inventory list

This can help you out when filing an insurance claim.

Taking these preventative measures can help you before a storm hits. However, if your property does suffer damage from a storm. Our SERVPRO® of Napa team of professionals are either a click or call away.

Commercial Loss

12/23/2021 (Permalink)

When dealing with a commercial loss, it is important to remediate the problem immediately. Your business might be in jeopardy if you do not take immediate action when dealing with large commercial loses. Commercial buildings, like any building, tend to occur damages overtime; things start to wear away, like caulking near the joints of windows and doors. Cracks in the siding become large and now you are dealing with water intrusion. Depending on where you are at in the United States, damages can come from storm, hurricanes, hail , heavy rain and often flooding being the biggest concern. According to the National Geographic,  floods cost homeowners and business owners nearly 6 Billion in loses annually. Below are a few tips to help prevent flood damages to your commercial property.

  1. Inspect your basement frequently in the event of a storm. Basements are the lowest point, which in turn is the most likely place you will see flood damages. Re-caulk all seams along windows, doors, baseboards where the foundation meets the soleplate . Install a Commercial grade sump pump in the lowest area of your basement, with the discharge pipe ran out of the commercial property.
  2. Improve your landscape and design a system to utilize the foliage and run offs to your advantage. Install French drains where necessary to properly direct the flow of the excess rain . It is extremely important to divert all water away from your foundation.
  3. Assess your property frequently, walk around and take notes on the damages you see. If you see discoloration near or on light fixtures, then typically that means the O-ring has failed and needs to be replaced. Check for any soft spots in your walls , as that would indicate there is a buildup of moisture or gray water has damaged the wall significantly . Be proactive ; do not wait for the storm to come and cause damages, it is better to find your vulnerabilities before the storm hits.

Why Do You Need a Professional When It Comes to Water Damage?

12/6/2021 (Permalink)

There is a common perception that you can just place a fan on a wet area, and everything will dry just fine. At first, this thinking seems straight forward. The problem is that this is just the surface of things. Water is often absorbed deep or trapped between different layers and varieties of materials, some porous, some not. Materials that remain wet for extended periods of time can become structurally compromised, discolored, swell, warp, produce odor or grow mold. This often leads into more problems and more expense. Due to these kinds of damages, it is important to have a knowledgeable and trained professional to make sure everything has been dried, and in the correct time frame. Our technicians know water. We know how it reacts to materials. We know how water travels and what it takes to get it out. We know what actions are needed to eliminate mold growth and how to get to the hard-to-reach places. Best of all we know to make it "Like it never even happened."

Broken or burst pipes, leaking roofs, back pressure and storms are just a few ways water can damage your home. It is nearly impossible to safeguard against all forms of intrusion. However, you can take simple preventative measure to help you minimize these possibilities. At least once per year you should perform simple inspection of your home.  Make sure to check water lines for cracks or signs of stress, make sure gutters are clear of debris, check the roof for missing or lose shingles or other damages and check windows and doors seals to ensure they are not damaged or if significant gaps exist. Doing these periodic checks can help eliminate water damage events in the future. Remember, “Fortune favors the PREPARED!”  In case of water damage call SERVPRO of Napa County at (707)226-2181

Preparing Your Napa Business for Wildfire Season

5/5/2021 (Permalink)

Businesses Have a Responsibility to Prepare for Wildfire Season

June through September are commonly when summer fires burn most fiercely. Wildfires can wreak havoc anywhere within California, and woodsy areas tend to be the most vulnerable due to the buildup of debris that rapidly catches fire. As with any natural disaster, business owners should develop a disaster recovery plan with the necessary instruction to keep businesses stable under extreme circumstances.

Develop a Wildfire Response Plan

A written wildfire response plan should be created and made accessible to all employees. Workers should be always aware of and familiar with the wildfire response plan instead of relying on it solely when a disaster quickly strikes. A plethora of copies of the wildfire response plan should be readily available when the unforeseeable happens. Employees should know the evacuation routes and practice traveling along with them. Be aware of the safest and secure location to retreat to if a wildfire burns and evacuation becomes necessary.

Maintain the Property

Scatters of natural debris can quickly start wildfires. Roofs, gutters, decks, alleys, and other areas around the property should be regularly cleaned of combustible materials, such as debris. It is important to note that dead vegetation should be immediately removed from the property.

Create a Defensible Space

Experts recommend fire scaping the property, which is otherwise known as developing a defensible property. The landscape should be structured strategically so that the disaster effect is lessened if a fire breaks out. Basically, the building is surrounded by less-flammable materials.

In fire scaping, near the business property are carefully picked, planted, and maintained to lessen the risk of combustion and diminish the rapid spread of wildfires. Fire smart plants with high moisture content and do not contain waxes, oils, or resins in their stems are ideal in fire scaping.

Protect Elevated Decks

Flammable materials should never be fixed underneath an elevated deck. Wildfires that happen have less chance to cause unrecoverable damage if the bottom of elevated decks is confined.

Close Vents

Attic and crawl space vents should be closed or safeguarded with a mesh screen to block flying ash from infiltrating the property.

Prepare a Disaster Kit

Businesses in high-risk wildfire locations benefit significantly from having a readily available disaster kit. At the least, the disaster kit should contain the following items:

  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Cash
  • Water and canned food
  • Blankets
  • Battery-powered radio or technology to facilitate communication

Be Prepared for Alerts

Due to wildfire alerts being publicly broadcasted, it is essential to regulate how you and your employees will receive alerts and health warnings. Whether it is through public service announcements, smartphone alerts, social media, or air quality reports.

Categories of Water Damage in Your Napa Home

5/5/2021 (Permalink)

Floodwater can cause substantial damage to your home or building and can be harmful to your health.  The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) classifies water into three types: clear, gray, and black. Knowing what the color of your floodwater means is important so you can clean and dispose of water safely. Typically, water damage restoration professionals from SERVPRO of Napa will complete an assessment to determine the extent of water removal efforts and the required equipment. Cleanup, drying, and restoration services follow. Part of this assessment involves determining what category of water has caused the damage to ensure proper safety procedures for extraction.

Category 1 (Clean Water)

Clean water is water that comes from your home’s inbound water pipes, also known as potable water. Clean water is water that you could have consumed safely before it flooded through your home or business. You’ll typically see flooding from clean water coming from a broken water line, toilet tank, a leaking washing machine, or the refrigerator. Clean water that is cleaned up quickly typically doesn’t create health risks, but after just 24-48 hours of contact with your home, it can become gray water.

Category 2 (Gray Water)Category 3 (Black Water)

Black water is water that has been contaminated by floodwaters or sewage. It can wash into your home due to a flooded river, or appear from a backed-up toilet, or clogged sewage line near your Napa home. This water typically contains harmful contaminants such as bacteria, mold, and viruses, which can be very dangerous to your health. If black water damage isn’t rapidly addressed by professionals, your home can become contaminated and an unsafe environment.

3 Ways To Avoid Fire Damage on Your Property

4/6/2021 (Permalink)

Your home is supposed to be a place of comfort and a sanctuary where you make memories and build your life. That is the reason why it is frightening to imagine your home ever suffering from a fire disaster. Although you can't control everything, here are some steps you can take to help reduce the risk of fire and smoke damage.

1. Smoke Alarms

If you don't already have a smoke detector or alarm, it's time to get one installed. These alarms are your best defense when it comes to minimizing fire damage. If you already have one, ensure you are checking it regularly. Test the batteries once a month and replace the system every ten years. Make sure you have an adequate number of detectors on every level if you have more than one floor in your home or business.

2. Fire Extinguishers

Choose a fire extinguisher that will correspond with your needs. They must be easily accessible, light enough to handle, and family members or employees are trained to use them.

3. Kitchen Incidents

Cooking equipment is often the cause of home fires and injuries. It's essential to be mindful while cooking in the kitchen, not only with how you cook but also leaving cooking surfaces unattended and appliances left on.

How We Can Help

Smoke and fire damage is best dealt with by professionals; they understand the complicated chemical interactions involved with soot and fire. The best thing to do is get in touch with SERVPRO of Napa County as soon as possible. We will assess your property and come up with a fire damage cleanup plan.

Flooding Can Strike Anywhere

2/16/2021 (Permalink)

Flooding and flash floods can happen almost everywhere, and at any time during heavy rains, when ocean waves come on shore, when snow melts too fast, or when dams or levees break.  Floods rank as one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States.  According to National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) more than 20% of all flood insurance claims come from areas in low to moderate risk flood zones.  On average, floods cost $6 billion in annual losses in the U.S.

Flash floods are the most dangerous kind of floods, because they combine the destructive power of a flood with incredible speed and unpredictability. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, and 2 feet of water can sweep your vehicle away.  Flash floods occur when excessive water fills normally dry creeks or river beds along with currently flowing creeks and rivers, causing rapid rises of water in a short amount of time. They can happen with little or no warning.

Many residents and business owners are unaware that they qualify for flood insurance. You can take steps to reduce the financial impact of flooding before a disaster strikes.

Preparing for a Flood

Residents and business owners need to prepare for flood conditions. Before the threat of flooding becomes imminent, residents and business owners should:

    • Purchase a flood insurance policy if they do not already have one.
    • Review their current insurance policy, become familiar with what is covered, and ensure the limits are adequate for their building and personal belongings.
    • Make an emergency kit, plan evacuation routes, and keep important papers in a safe, waterproof place.
    • Itemize and take pictures of possessions.

If you are experiencing water damage due to flood, give SERVPRO of Napa County a call 707-226-2181  We're Here to Help restore your home or business back to pre-water damage condition.  We can quickly extract the water and then dry your property using state-of-the-art equipment.

Our SERVPRO of Napa County team of professionals are either a click or call away.

Flood Clean Up Tips

2/2/2021 (Permalink)

Before entering a building where flood damage may have occurred, make sure it’s safe: check for electrical hazards and structural damage, and use proper protective gear like boots, gloves and respirators. Before you start any construction or repairs, check for common hazardous materials like lead paint and asbestos, which may require help from professional and State-licensed contractors.

Then, follow these tips:

  • Act quickly
The severity of damage escalates the longer water sits and building components and contents stay wet, so time is of the essence in the aftermath of a flood. In fact, mold will grow within 48-72 hours, so aim to start removing water and drying the environment within 48 hours. Have a list of professionals on hand to call, and understand your insurance policy, as some only cover mold damage up to a certain amount, while others don’t provide any reimbursement for mold.
  • Ventilate affected areas to prevent mold growth
Mold loves moisture and organic materials such as paper or particleboard. In order to mitigate or slow damage, open windows if weather permits and place fans inside of them to keep air moving and maintain moderate temperatures. Work toward the fan as you clean to minimize cross contamination.
  • Assess damage to items and materials
Assess the type of water absorbed by items, such as rainwater, water from broken pipes, contaminated river water or bacteria-filled sewage. There are ways to salvage specialty items but the decision on whether to save or trash an item will vary depending on the dollar and sentimental value to the owner. It may not be worthwhile to salvage drywall, carpets and pads, mattresses, pillows, box springs and particleboard. On the other hand, it might be worthwhile to restore costly Persian rugs, leather couches and antiques or heirlooms. Wet clothing and many household fabrics may be salvageable through machine washing, and a 10-minute soak in detergent and hot water, to remove contamination and stains. The IICRC strongly recommends that in water damages where there are contaminants present (e.g., bacteria, sewage, mold) or where small children or immune-compromised individuals are present that an inspection be conducted by an appropriately trained restorer and remediator.
  • Expose pockets of saturation
Hidden and concealed pockets of saturation need to be opened for cleaning and drying. Layers between building materials hold water that must be discovered and removed or dried. On walls, find the water line and inspect at least a foot beyond it to make sure all damage, wet materials and mold are discovered. Remove and discard the damaged drywall and wet wall insulation. Wet carpets can usually be dried by professionals with the right equipment, but carpet padding, which is like a big sponge, should be discarded. Wood base trim and hardwood can also be saved with the right equipment if they can be accessed and completely dried on both sides. Remember to investigate concealed cavities such as behind walls, in mechanical spaces, under cabinets and furniture, and in crawl spaces.
  • Conduct a thorough cleaning
Durable, non-porous or semi-porous materials, such as studs and joists, hardwood flooring and vinyl products, can be cleaned with common cleaning products or specialized products with detergents. During cleaning, take care to protect areas that are unaffected by the water or mold. After a thorough cleaning of salvageable materials, a disinfectant solution may need to be applied in case of harmful bacteria from sewage, river water debris or even standing water that has gone bad. Professionals like water restoration and mold remediation contractors and indoor environmental professionals can help you decide what is best for your situation. Once you’ve cleaned the wet materials, conduct another round of cleaning. If you choose to vacuum, use a HEPA-filter vacuum to remove allergens, fine dust and spores.
  • Confirm drying before reconstruction
In order to prevent dry rot and structural damage, it’s important not to reconstruct or cover wood and other wet materials until the moisture content has been adequately reduced. A water restoration professional can confirm proper drying before reconstruction.

Storm Damage - Dealing With The Aftermath

1/4/2021 (Permalink)

Storm damage of any kind whether it is high winds, hail, floods or lightning it all make a mess out of your home and life. It is hard to look at the mess that surrounds what used to be your home and not dive right in to start the clean up. Believe it or not you will not want to do that. Initially you should contact your insurance company. A representative will come out to your home and evaluate the damage that the storm has created. They should also lay out a detailed plan to help get your life restarted. You will have to continue living even though storm damage has turned your life topsy-turvy.

How do you get started? Is it possible to tell who is actually going to help you and not scam you or rip you off? Is it possible to completely trust your insurance agent? Who do you contact for expert advice? These questions are hard to answer when you are sitting there vulnerable after a natural disaster of any magnitude. Here is a list of advice to get you started in the long and overwhelming process of repairing storm damage to your home.

Storm Damage Checklist

Contact your insurance agent. This is of course the first and most important advice anyone can give you. Your insurance agent is your ally. Make sure when you are purchasing insurance in the first place that you research local insurance agents. A good rate is one thing but an insurance company that you can count on in a time of need is something completely different. The cheapest might not always be the best way to go.

Don't start any repairs or cleanup efforts until you have had the damage accessed by the professionals. First you don't want to get hurt, second you don't want to make things worse and third you need to give the adjuster the full scope of damage. It is important that you do document in video and film the damage from your prospective. Just in case later on down the road the adjuster gets shaky with his evaluation.

No repairs should be started before you have agreed upon a settlement with you insurance company. If you do something like boarding up windows and such make sure to save receipts. Materials will often be reimbursed. That is the only type of work that should even be contemplated before a final approval has been gone over.

Your homeowner's insurance policy should cover a temporary home for you. Make sure to check with the agent when they arrive to scope out the damage. They might have special restrictions on where you are allowed to stay and for how long, make sure you are aware of these things in advance if possible.

It is so important that you fully understand and are aware of the limitations that the insurance company has in place regarding the coverage on your home in regards to different events. You want to know how you are covered and the differences in coverage for floods, fires, natural disasters, storms, hail, lightening and all that loveliness that storm damage brings. You should also be aware that if you move to another state or another area in your state you could need special coverage for that area. The best advice any homeowner can receive is to find a trustworthy and reliable insurance agent. They will be your best ally if storm damage ever affects your household

Commercial Storm Damage Restoration in Napa County

12/28/2020 (Permalink)

Tips for Residential Fire Safety

12/22/2020 (Permalink)

We all want to keep our family and property safe from dangerous, deadly fires. But do many of us take time to ensure that we, in fact, are safe? Take time to employ these 8 tips for residential fire safety to keep your loved ones and pets out of harm's way.

Avoid Hazards - One of the best ways to prevent residential fires is to avoid certain habits and practices that can lead to blazes. A tried and true rule to always follow is to place all lighters and matches in high areas away from a child's reach. Also use caution when burning candles in the home and teach your children that both matches and lighters are not toys to be played with.

Have a Plan - Have a plan for you and your family on what to do if a fire does occur. Make sure to vary the plan based on where the fire occurs and what type of fire it is. When you have your strategy in place purchase the needed safety tools (IE. fire ladder, fire extinguisher) and place them in the designated areas. You will also want a plan on how to practice your skills to maintain your fire tools such as when to perform a fire extinguisher inspection.

Practice Your Plan - Having a plan in place in the event of a fire is only half of the job. In order for your family to be safe, they must feel comfortable on executing the plan. Take time to practice a fake fire in the home so every family member can rehearse the plan. It may be beneficial to do varying scenarios so that different approaches can be made.

Inspect Your Equipment - Make sure to perform a fire extinguisher inspection on a regular basis to ensure it is in proper working order.

Hire a Chimney Sweep - Have your chimney swept by a professional on a yearly basis preferable before the heating season. Creosote can build up in the flue leaving your chimney vulnerable to a fire.

Educate Yourself - Educate you and your family on basic fire safety skills. There are many educational books geared to children that cover the topic empowering them to make wise choices in the event of a fire in the home.

Alarm Your Home - Always have both a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector on each floor of the home. Test both regularly and replace batteries as needed. Carbon monoxide detectors often have an expiration date. To help me remember when the date is approaching, I used a black permanent marker to write the date on the bottom of the unit facing the floor so anytime I look up I can clearly see if the unit is near expiration.

Be Smart - Common sense can go a long way in overall fire safety in the home. Make sure you know the basics of how to protect you and your family from home fires. Also teach your children how to approach fire hazards using good judgment and practical knowledge.

Follow these residential fire prevention tips to keep your family and home safe from a dangerous blaze. Performing a fire extinguisher inspection, sweeping your flue, and the other six tips are all important to maintaining a nontoxic environment for those you love to work and play in.

Smoke Clean up in Napa County

12/18/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Napa County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

The Most Common Causes of Commercial Fires

12/8/2020 (Permalink)

IICRC Certified Technicians

12/1/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage can be deceptive. Water penetrates into structural cavities creating trapped pockets of saturation. The detection of water in these areas can often only be discovered with sophisticated moisture detection meters. Undetected moisture will continue to cause damage. This damage, at a minimum, will cause odors. Greater damage will surface when materials delaminate, shrink, split and further deteriorate to where costly repairs are required.

More than just removing excess water, IICRC-certified restorers have the knowledge and equipment to further dry a home or facility (including substructure materials) completely back to pre loss conditions. Through timely response and the careful monitoring of water damage, mold and other health issues can be prevented. If water damage has been present too long, mold will occur.

All IICRC-certified professionals have the training and experience to identify moisture sources, evaluate mold growth (visible or suspected), contain damage, remove contamination and dry materials to ensure that mold will not return.

Tips to Prevent Water Damage

11/23/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Napa County is always here to help when you have water damage in your home or business, but we also strongly believe in prevention. Water can damage important things and make you lose valued items, and nobody wants that. That's why we are bringing you some tips to help you be safe from water damage:

  • Ensure Good Drainage

Poor drainage weakens your foundation, causing cracks, uneven settling, and pathways for water to enter your home.

  • Test Your Sump Pump Regularly

Sump pumps come to life during storms. That’s not when you want to realize yours isn’t working properly. You should check it at least once a year, and ideally perform several checks during heavy storm seasons.

  • Check for Water Leaks and Fix Them

Persistent leaks lead to mold and mildew, rot, and even termites and carpenter ants (they like chewing soggy wood, since it’s soft). Yet if you fix a leak soon after it starts, there may be no long-term damage at all.

Remember to call SERVPRO of Napa County at (707)226-2181 if you need assistance with water damage.

Maintain and Understand your Indoor Plumbing Systems

11/20/2020 (Permalink)

  • Inspect appliance hoses and faucets. Make it a practice every year to check hoses leading to water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerator ice makers. You may also want to invest in a water leak monitoring and shut-off system that can alert you to any leakage issues. Immediately replace any hoses that have cracks or leaks, and replace them all every five to seven years.
  • Inspect showers and tubs. Check the seal and caulking around showers and tubs to make sure they are watertight and reseal if necessary.
  • When away on vacation, shut off the water supply to the washing machine and never leave the house while the washer or dishwasher is running.
  • Know the location of the main water shut-off valve in your home. A damaged hose or a burst pipe can send water racing into your home. Being able to locate and shut off the main water supply quickly will save stress, money and time.
  • Install an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system. This will protect against the increased pressure caused by freezing pipes and can help prevent your pipes from bursting.
  • Check plumbing and heating pipes. Look closely for cracks and leaks and have any necessary repairs made immediately.

If you need assistance with water damage call SERVPRO of Napa County at (707)226-2181

Common Causes of Kitchen Fires

11/19/2020 (Permalink)

The kitchen is the source of many fire hazards because it's where heat, electricity, water and grease come together.  The most common type of fire is the grease fire.  A grease fire is extremely dangerous as it can get out of control quickly and spread from the stove throughout the kitchen and into other rooms of the house.

Common Causes of Kitchen Fires

  • Too high temperature in the fryer
  • Vegetable, more flammable, oils
  • Old, more flammable oil, in the deep fryer
  • Fat deposits in the flue and ventilation ducts
  • Misalignment sprinklers due to equipment moved around
  • Clogged melting links of the sprinklers leading to impaired function

Other types of kitchen fires include oven fire or the microwave.  When a fire starts, keep the door closed and turn off the oven.   The lack of oxygen will suffocate the flames. If continues to smoke like a fire use a fire extinguisher or call fire department.

At SERVPRO of Napa County we are available 24 hours and 7 days a week.  Give us a call at (707) 226-2181.  We can help make any fire damage you are facing and make it, "Like it never even happened."

Where to Begin After a House Fire

11/17/2020 (Permalink)

Of course, the most important thing to do after any size fire is to have the home inspected for safety. There may be hidden damage to electrical wiring, wall supports, and foundations that should be corrected before cleaning and finishing cosmetic touches like painting walls. The inspection may be conducted by the fire marshal or by a representative of your insurance company.

Once the site is cleared as safe to enter, you'll still need to take precautions before heading in to document the damage. Adults should be wearing close-toed shoes, long-sleeved shirts and long pants, safety glasses, and work gloves. It is best to wear face masks and keep small children away from the damage. SERVPRO of Napa County is always ready to help and assist you with any fire damage questions.  Please call us at  (707) 226-2181

Tips for Residential Fire Safety

5/5/2020 (Permalink)

Helpful Tips to Prepare for Water Damage

Carpet affected with water Water damage affected commercial carpet.

  1. Know your insurance coverage. Most renter’s or homeowners insurance policies don’t cover flooding, or even a sewer backup. Find out what coverage you have.
  2. Keep a record of all of your belongings. Take photos and keep copies of a receipts or other documents for your valuable items. Store a copy of these records online or at another location.
  3. To limit the risk of water damage within your home check your pipes frequently and pay attention to any indicators of water damage, such as dripping sounds in the walls, dark spots on the ceiling, or significant change in your water bill.
  4. Inspect your roof and foundation often. Make sure there are no cracks in the foundation or shingles missing. Check that the landscaping around your home is sloped to direct water away from your foundation, rather than toward it.
  5.  Water damage can be overwhelming. If a water damage should strike find an expert you can count on. SERVPRO of Napa County is Always Here to Help! –Call 707-226-2181

Storm Damage: Dealing with the Aftermath

4/16/2020 (Permalink)

They will be your best ally if storm damage ever affects your household.

Common Causes of Kitchen Fires

4/15/2020 (Permalink)

Pets can cause a fire

4/15/2020 (Permalink)

  • Pets are curious. They may bump into, turn on, or knock over cooking equipment. Keep pets away from stoves and counter tops
  • Keep pets away from candles, lamps, and space heaters.
  • Always use a metal or heat-tempered glass screen on a fireplace and keep it in place.
  • Keep pets away from a chimney’s outside vents. Have a “pet-free zone” of at least 3 feet (1 meter) away from the fireplace. Glass doors and screens can stay dangerously hot for several hours after the fire goes out.
  • Consider battery-operated, flameless candles. They can look and smell like real candles.
  • Some pets are chewers. Watch pets to make sure they don’t chew through electrical cords. Have any problems checked by a professional.
  • Have working smoke alarms on every level of the home. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month.
  • If the smoke alarm sounds, get out and stay out.
  • Never go back inside for pets in a fire. Tell firefighters if your pet is trapped.

If you experience fire damage don't hesitate to call SERVPRO of Napa County.  We always ready to help.

Restoration from Storm Damage

Locker room with red lockers to the left and red doors to the right. Dehumidifiers are located on the floor. This locker room was one of many rooms in the building that needed water removal.

This winter season, we did not experience that much rain. However, the weather channel is predicting that beginning in March, we will experience rain in the bay area. Therefore, we must make sure that our properties are protected. Recently, our team got a call about a flood in their building and we went to go remove the water with our industrial size pump. We then had to monitor and remove any trace of water to avoid further damage done to the floor of this building. During this process, as you can see in our photo, we used dehumidifiers and other machines to make sure that the area is completely dried. Eventually the job took a few days to complete given the size of the damage. But we made also made sure that the property was restored, “Like it never even happened.” However, we also would like to state that prevention is key and that having your best interests in mind. We would like it if a disaster of this scale does not occur to your property. But if it does, then contact us and we will minimize the interruption in your life.

5 Workplace Safety Tips for Small Businesses

2/24/2020 (Permalink)

Small businesses, especially start-ups need to make sure that before operations occur, safety should be of upmost importance. Although this may seem like a given, there are instances when businesses do not follow certain requirements set by OSHA, get an employee injured and set themselves up the legal repercussions.  Therefore, here are 5 steps that we take here at SERVPRO of Sonoma/Napa that can protect you and avoid most accidents in the workplace.

Easy Access to your Safety Rules

Every job site or office needs to make their rules visible or easily accessible by their employees instead of just containing them within a rule book. This can work as a friendly reminder for your team members in case a situation arises.

Make Employees Involved

If you give a damn, your employees will too. Make sure that you are sincere and mindful of your employee needs and that their safety is not just for your protection but because you would not want any accident to befall them.

Communication

Although it is important to effectively communicate safety rules. It is even more important to emphasis that other employees should communicate quickly if they see something potentially unsafe or a hostile work environment. Communication is key!

Avoid Making Shortcuts

Getting things done quickly may look attractive with productivity, however, these conditions and work environment can increase the likelihood of workplace injuries. Therefore, productivity should not be at the expense of your employees.

Practice an Emergency Ready Plan

Make sure you have a plan for your employees that follows federal protocol about any situation that might arise. In the event of a natural disaster, contact your local SERVPRO and we can get you started on one of our own Emergency Ready Profiles (ERP). This complimentary plan would be easily accessible through an app on your mobile device that would contain the necessary information in the event of a disaster.

Safety should be the priority of every business. Prevention is key, and we have your back.

Six Ways to Protect Your Home Before A Storm

2/14/2020 (Permalink)

Old and dirty roof tiles that are in desperate need of repairs. A roof that needs repairs.

Our SERVPRO® of Sonoma/Napa team of professionals are either a click or call away.

This Home Was Destroyed During a Wildfire

2/6/2020 (Permalink)

Front view of a home destroyed by a fire with a white painted railing leading to the ground and unharmed by the fire. Home we visited that was destroyed by fire.

We speak a lot about fire prevention but there are times where natural disasters occur and a storm can devastate your property. Recently, we experienced the destruction of Kincade, which destroyed many homes and businesses.

Fortunately, there are no reported casualties due to quick decision making and mass evacuation of people north of Santa Rosa, CA. Many surrounding counties suffered blackouts and even we had to undergo a time period with no power. However, we at SERVPRO of Napa County are prepared and arrived to locations alongside other teams from other counties and states to lend a hand and help businesses and homeowners restore their property or protect them from harmful air pollution.

Although, there are times when our representatives arrive to a location that has been completely decimated by a fire. In this case, an entire home was destroyed leaving a family with the decision of relocating while the repairing process began.

Prevention and planning are key for ones' safety during a storm that is out of our control.

The Restoration of an Educational Facility

2/3/2020 (Permalink)

Cardboard boxes with the SERVPRO logo in the center of the room are stacked in 4 rows in a library. A school needed our help and we came in with the equipment needed to get the job done.

Recently, we were contacted by a school that needed our services due to a minor flood that damaged a huge portion of their floor. We came in and inspected the damage and found that although there were many rooms that were affected, we had the tools and resources to get the job done quickly and efficiently so that we could make it look, “Like it never even happened.” To get this done we sent in our best team to investigate the flooring, check for mold, and begin the drying process using our specialized equipment. After drying, we use a device to check for any moisture or mold again to make sure that no additional damage would ensue.

Protecting Your Valuable Items, the SERVPRO Way!

1/3/2020 (Permalink)

The month of December is on average the wettest season in the East Bay. However, we are not in the clear skies yet, as the rain will persist during the month of January. Therefore, I would like to discuss the process of contents or item restoration. When a storm hits your home, the devastation may leave numerous locations in need of restoration or repairing. That is why we also conduct organized and efficient pack-outs for all belongings in your property. This ensures a quicker remodeling process and protects your items from any potential damage from a coming storm or from on-site work. We take your belongings to our warehouse where we will cleanup and remove any water damaged using our Esporta IS4000. This machine can restore up to level 4 water damaged items. We remove any water and leave it to dry with our specialize heaters and dehumidifiers.

For any storm related situations, feel free to contact us and our service professionals will help you through the process.

Make Sure to Water Your Christmas Tree

12/24/2019 (Permalink)

A lighted Christmas tree in the background with a red ornament on the right with an image of pine trees. Merry Christmas!

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), between 2013-2017, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 160 home fires that began with Christmas trees. Although this can happen, you can reduce the rate of fire by simply watering your trees daily. A dried up tree can completely be engulfed in flames in a matter of seconds, whereas, a watered tree can buy you some time since the rate of increasing flames is lower. Therefore, this year and next year be sure to water your Christmas trees to avoid any sudden disasters.

This Christmas and Holiday season please be safe and thank you from your friends at here at SERVPRO for a wonderful year.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a Happy New Year!

Cleaning Gutters saves Time and Money

11/26/2019 (Permalink)

Cleaning gutters is part of home maintenance and before the rainy season it would be in your best interest to check and clean your gutters from any debris that might lead to a clog.

What you'll need:

  • Ladder
  • Buckets or a tarp
  • Trowel or gutter scoop
  • Garden hose
  • Spray nozzle
  • Wire hooks
  • Work gloves or latex gloves
  • Gutter hardware

First thing you’d want to do is place the ladder squarely and safely on the floor. Then place a tarp or buckets underneath for collecting debris. Put on your latex gloves and then your work gloves to keep your hands dry. Afterwards, grab the debris you can clogging the gutters and throw them to the tarp below or place them in a bucket. The next step would be to use the garden hose with the spray nozzle attached to flush any remaining debris in the gutters. If you don’t see the same amount of water is releasing from the drain, it might mean that you have a clog. In this case you’d want to place the hose at full power from the bottom of your gutter to shoot water in the opposite direction.  The last thing would be to check the gutter and see if it is sloped correctly to remove the possibility of standing water.

Taking these steps will assure that you have a nice clean flow of water when the rain falls. Here at SERVPRO of Napa County we want to inform you of preventative measures to keep your home from water damage.

If you need restoration services from a leader in the industry with nationwide support. Then call us at (707) 226-2181. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Winter is Coming

Top of photo says, "Here to Help" and there is a SERVPRO professional copied 3x holding a flashlight under a crawl space. Here to Help

The rainy season begins.

Taking preventative measures to avoid water entering your home and causing damage is vital to avoid any headache inducing accidents. I just learned that even in California pipes can freeze and rupture leaving your home vulnerable to massive damage. These are a couple of prevention methods to avoid major catastrophe from our rainy season.

Check your pipes.

Make sure that they are well insulated by using electrical tape around foam or any other insulation material around your pipes. For the harder to reach pipes, it is advised to use hot water to run through the pipes to warm them up.

Caulk and seal your windows.

Inspect your home and count the windows that need to be caulked. Having a caulking gun that you can buy at your local hardware store is needed. However, determining what type of caulk you use will determine on your specific home needs. I would recommend asking a professional. Things to consider as well, your timing of the project and the weather conditions. Caulk may take 24 hours to dry and a rainstorm could ruin your progress. Then make sure you clean and remove any old caulk before applying the new caulk. Smooth it out with a popsicle stick or plastic spoon. Then wait for 24 hours and your home becomes better insulated.

Inspect your roof.

This is very important and dangerous if not handled carefully. I would advise hiring a professional to inspect and make any necessary changes to keep water from leaking through your roof. Also note the condition your gutter is in. Remove any clutter to allow the proper drainage of water.

There are many more preventative measures but taking these steps will secure your home a little more than just riding the season out.

Ten Things I Needed During a Power Outage

11/20/2019 (Permalink)

The number ten in big black bold font inside of a yellow circle background. Top Ten!

What I Needed During a Power Outage

October was full of unpredictable circumstances. The Kincade fire grew at an exponential rate and endangered our neighborhoods. PG&E had to take drastic precautionary measures by shutting off the power lines to around a million residents of both Sonoma, Napa, and Marin county. Fortunately, we had government support through a declaration of National Emergency which led to the dispatching of firefighters from neighboring cities, counties, and states. These brave people contained the fire and prevented major catastrophe.

The outage was an unfortunate circumstance and there were specific items that I wish I had in my possession to make the experience easier. The next time an outage occurs I want to be prepared and share with you the top ten essential items I needed during a power outage.

Top Ten List:

  1. First Aid Kit: Safety first!
  2. Powered Portable Charger(s): Cell phones or laptops are essential for daily living. Having a communication device during an emergency can be a lifesaver. Also, passing the time online when there is no power can make the process easier.
  3. Batteries: AA, AAA, or a backup battery are useful to power items that require them. Such as a flashlight or have in case you possess items that require batteries. Such as a flashlight, clocks, or radios.
  4. Flashlight: A flashlight is important for visibility at night. During a power outage, it can be difficult to move around. While I recommend having a LED flashlight, any normal light is useful to have.
  5. Gas: During the outage, many people had informed me that they were low on gas and therefore confined to their area until the power came back on or until someone can help them get to a gas station with power to be able to transfer gas back to their vehicles. Having a car filled with gas can also be essential for rapidly evacuating during an emergency.
  6. Cooler: The first thing I thought about during the outage was whether my food was going to spoil since our refrigerator was no longer running. Having a cooler could have erased this worry by transferring the food that would’ve spoiled without refrigeration. Of course, having a cooler alone won’t work in the preservation of your food.
  7. Manual Can opener: Can openers can be a huge aid when you need to open your non-perishable foods.
  8. Ice: This is the trickiest item on the list to have since a fire and outage are unpredictable. Ice does not have a long-life span as it melts easily and without refrigeration or a permanent cold environment, ice is a valuable resource that one needs to get an upper-hand when buying since it is the first thing to go at the grocery stores.
  9. Canned Food or Non-perishables: Being that food is a necessity for survival. Having food that does not perish without electricity can determine life or death. Well at least, that you don’t spend the days starving at least. Food includes: bars, nuts, candies, peanut butter, chips, beef jerky and much more.
  10. Bottled Water: The most important resource to have access to during a crisis. Preferably not stored in plastic but only if needed. Just make sure you don’t leave the bottles unattended in the car with sunlight directly hitting them.

Disclaimer:

This list is intended for short term emergencies and everyone has different needs therefore different priorities. That was my list of ten things I needed during the power outage. Hopefully, it helps.

How to Clean A Fire Damaged Home

11/18/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO professional front center holding a broom. Duplicates of him to the left and right side cleaning the roofs from smoke HERE TO HELP!

A fire can have a detrimental effect on one’s life. Costs for repairing or fixing can be astronomically high depending on your insurance plan and provider. However, if the damage is small enough, here at SERVPRO of Napa County, we would like to share with you some restoration tips for a more cost-effective approach. The information provided can also be viewed in more detail by accessing the American Red Cross website.

First thing you’ll need is safety gear. I cannot emphasize the importance of this enough. The chemicals used in this process are caustic and will harm you if used incorrectly. Safety gear includes: rubber gloves, aprons, heavy soled shoes, and nose masks or face protection masks. Place a canvas drop cloth to protect the floor from getting stained further. Meanwhile, ventilate the area with a fan.

While wearing rubber gloves, measure 4-6tsps of tri-sodium phosphate with 1 cup of household bleach for every gallon of warm water used for cleaning or you can use a mild soap or detergent to remove soot and smoke from walls, furniture, and floors.

*Make sure you test surfaces to ensure that bleach solution will not cause discoloring. To conduct this test, wipe a small area of the surface with bleach and allow it to dry for 24 hours.

Wipe the walls using a chemical dry-cleaning sponge. Wipe the walls slowly and carefully. Whenever the sponge becomes saturated with soot or smoke, wash and let it dry before you continue. Repeat this process until most of the soot is removed. To get the best results, make sure you wipe the walls from top to bottom and side to side. There might still be stubborn stains on the wall. In this case, you can use either a paint thinner or rubbing alcohol to gently rub over the walls until the stubborn stains are gone.

Wipe leather goods with a damp cloth and dry cloth. Use newspapers as stuffing for your purses and shoes. Leave suitcases open. When the leather dries, wipe it clean with a saddle soap. Rinse leather and suede jackets in cold water and then leave to dry.

*Leather goods should be dried away from any heat or sun.

Follow public health guidance on safe cleanup of fire ash and safe use of masks. Also make sure to wet debris down to minimize breathing harmful dust particles. If you have an older home, please consult with a professional to avoid any asbestos inhalation as well.

SERVPRO® franchise professionals are leaders in fire and water cleanup and restoration.

Why You Should Hire a Water Damage Service

5/6/2019 (Permalink)

After sustaining any form of water damage to your home - if it's on a significantly large scale - you'll seriously want to consider hiring a water damage service. It can be tempting to try and repair everything yourself, but not only could this be dangerous, but you could also risk doing a poor job that doesn't sufficiently fix the problem.

A side from that, the cost of hiring such a service could also be covered by your insurance company, depending on your individual situation, so in that case there's really no reason not to use a professional. In this article we'll take a look at some of the ways a professional can help you, and why it can be a lot more effective than trying to do everything yourself:

They Have More Effective Equipment: When it comes to removing any water in your home and drying out any dampness, the equipment that a professional service uses will be a lot more effective at doing the job. Not only will they be able to fully remove any visible water and wet patches in your home, they'll also have special equipment that can detect moisture in walls that you just wouldn't know about by yourself. This can prove critical to the long term structure of your home, and even your health as you don't want mold building up that you aren't aware of.

They Can Fully Ensure The Problem Is Solved: A water damage professional will have the necessary skills and experience to ensure that the problem is fully solved for good. If you are to dry the dampness out yourself, everything may appear to be fine but there may be underlying problems that you aren't aware of. A professional service will be able to detect any underlying problems and ensure that the damage is repaired for good.

The Cost May Be Recouped From Insurance: Standard home insurance doesn't cover all events of water damage, but it will cover some forms. It depends on your individual situation. Generally, if the problem occurred entirely from something that was out of your control, then insurance will be able to help you out. There are exceptions though, such as flooding, which usually requires it's own separate insurance cover. For this you'll obvious need to consult with your own insurance provider, but it's definitely something you should look into. The cost of a good water damage service will be well worth it, so if an insurance payout is made, then all the more reason to go with one.

In conclusion, the benefits of using a good water damage service far outweigh the downsides. The aftermath of water damage is definitely not something to be taken lightly, as the after effects can result in substantial damage to your home or health. Find out what your local water damage service has to say about your situation and take it from there.

Kitchen Fire Safety

5/6/2019 (Permalink)

Kitchens are a natural place for fires to start: you are already working with open flames or very high heat. Take extra precautions to prevent fires.

Preventing kitchen fires

The number one cause of kitchen fires is unattended cooking. When cooking anything on top of the stove, or in the oven, stay with it. For long-cooking dishes, plan activities you can do in the kitchen, such as cleaning or preparing other dishes. If "kitchen activities" don't come to mind, consider reading, writing, chatting with family or friends, or even reading a story to the kids. All of these can keep you happily and productively occupied while keeping an eye on what is being cooked.

If you cannot or don't want to stay in the kitchen:

  1. Check frequently on food that is cooking,
  2. Have a working smoke alarm installed where it can warn of potential fire.
  3. Keep a fire extinguisher within easy reach.

Kitchens can be very active places, especially when meals are being prepared. These basic tips can increase your safety:

  1. Wear short-sleeve, close fitting clothing when cooking. Loose clothing can more easily catch fire.
  2. Watch children closely in the kitchen. Teach them fire safety and proper handling of tools to prevent burns, cuts, or other injuries. Do this before you teach them to cook. Stay with children for every step as they are learning to cook. Reinforce and praise their safety skills.
  3. Grease can accumulate quickly in the kitchen. Grease fires can quickly spread to the entire kitchen. Clean your cooking surfaces and counters frequently to prevent food and grease build-up. Ideally this should be done immediately after cooking, or during clean-up after each meal.
  4. Keep flammable materials, such as curtains, towels, pot holders, plastic or paper bags, away form cooking surfaces.
  5. Store all solvents and flammable cleaners well away from all heat sources. Never keep gasoline or kerosene in the house, especially not in the kitchen.
  6. While cooking, make sure pan handles are turned away from the front of the stove so that no one will accidentally bump them. Boiling water or hot grease thrown from a jostled pan can cause severe burns. Keep the area in front of the stove clear and calm while cooking.

Putting out a fire

Even with the greatest care, you may someday have to put out a kitchen fire.

First, assess the danger. If the fire has spread beyond the oven or a pan, call the fire department right away. In most locations, you can call 911 and they will transfer you to the needed service.

If the fire is small and contained, as in food flaming in a pan, these tips may help:

  1. Slide a pan lid over a grease or oil fire to smother flames. Turn off the heat. Watch carefully to make sure the fire is not spreading somewhere unexpected. Leave the lid in place until it cools. Once the fire is completely out and everything is cool, thoroughly clean everything that was involved in the fire, especially the stove top or oven. If the flame got outside of a pan, you will need to decide whether there was any damage that must be repaired before you can cook again. Caution: Never attempt to carry a flaming pan outside. Doing this increases your risk of spreading the fire and of being burned.
  2. Keep a large box of baking soda on hand. Aside from its other uses, you can pour baking soda over most small food fires to extinguish the flames.
  3. Never use water or flour to put out fires. Water added to a grease fire reacts violently, sending hot grease everywhere. This spreads the fire and increases your chance of being burned. Flour can have a similar effect. Water poured on flames can also get into electrical circuits in the stove or oven, which can complicate the situation and increase the danger.
  4. If a fire occurs in your oven, keep the door shut and turn off the heat. This will usually smother the flames without further risk.
  5. Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. There are several types of extinguishers, each designed for use with specific kinds of fire. Make sure you have the right kind; one that can put out grease-based fires most often found.

How Can Professional Services Help With Water Damage Repair

4/12/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage, no matter how minor and unnoticeable, can be equally damaging to your house as something as severe as floods. Any damage caused to your belongings due to water absorption needs immediate attention and in most cases mold removal needs professional help. Even if the water penetration is the result of an unnoticeable water spot, it can cause substantial damage to your property. Some of the significant signs for mold remediation include mold growth, peeling paint, bad odor and moisture on carpets and other furniture.

Water damage does not necessarily have to be visible and overwhelming. Hence, it is important for you to know how to detect water absorption and where to look for it. Some of the common places you are likely to find initial signs of water damage are:

Firstly, the roof of your house, which is subject to wear and tear due to various reasons like weather extremities, continuous hitting from tree branches, old or poor-quality roof tiling etc. Water dripping down any part of the roof is a sign of mold remediation.

Secondly, water can penetrate through doors and windows, in case they are not installed properly, and cause considerable mold repair. Moreover, water intrusion can also damage the insulation system within your house. Notice your doors and windows carefully during rainfall and other weather changes for possible signs of mold damage.

Thirdly, blocked or overflowing gutters and drains can be a substantial cause of water damage in your house. During heavy rainfall, if the gutters are clogged, it fails to send down the water flowing from the roofs, resulting in a large amount of water accumulating near the base of your house. Such accumulations are harmful for the foundation of the house, causing moisture to penetrate into your house.

Fourthly, appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, dryers, refrigerators, etc. should be regularly checked and regulated for proper maintenance and prevention of possible leakages, which might be a cause of water damage.

Lastly, water damage can also be caused by factors as serious as sewage overflow and flood.

Whatever may be the cause of these damages, and however minor or severe their projections may be, they need to be taken care of as soon as they attack. The best way to deal with this problem is to contact experienced mold remediation repair services on an immediate basis. Expert services have the necessary experience and knowledge to solve your mold damage problems through required equipment and expertise. The tools they use for helping with water damage are:

  • Measuring equipment like hygrometers and moisture detectors to identify the exact level of mold remediation caused.
  • Sensors like infrared camera to detect water penetration even in remote corners, where mold retention can cause substantial damage.
  • Highly powerful gas-pumps to pump out high levels of water.
  • High-quality Dehumidifiers for adequate drying of the area or objects.
  • Superior products for deodorizing and disinfecting the affected location or objects.

These professional services are reliable and available at your service 24 hours and 7 days a week. They are quick to reach you within about an hour, which is extremely important during periods of emergency.

Storm Damage: Tips to Making It Through a Storm

4/12/2019 (Permalink)

We have been having some major storms lately. Tornadoes, hurricanes and torrential rains have been wreaking havoc throughout the United States. It is important to be as prepared as possible if a storm is coming your way. This means different things depending on the areas in which you live. Also, storm damage varies from location to location. Weather extremes make storm damage nearly impossible to predict. Lightning, wind, ice, floods, rain, extreme cold and heat can cause all types of damage to your home.

When a storm hits it is best to be prepared. Here are some tips to help you maximize safety and minimize the inconvenience storms and storm damage can bring to your life.

1) Have flashlights with spare batteries in a location that is easy to access. Avoid candles if at all possible. It is easier than many homeowners think to leave a candle lit and have fire ravage through your house. Storm damage creates a mess but fire damage creates an environment where the effects are long lasting.

2) Purchase extra bottled water and canned foods. This will create less havoc for you encase of a long lasting power outage. It is important that you have extra water to cook with as well as to drink.

3) Use surge protectors on all major appliances. They will help eliminate the surge from entering these valuable pieces of equipment rendering them useless. If you do not have surge protection and you have fair warning a storm is headed your way unplug all major appliances and electronics.

4) Make sure you have a battery operated radio. It should be on and tuned in to a local station for regular updates.

5) If you go out after a storm has hit you area make sure to avoid down power lines. They are still full of energy and will shock you.

6) If your lights blow during a storm double check your fuse breaker box make sure that you have not just blown the fuses by asking neighbors if their power is out also. If it is the power call the electric company to make sure they are aware of the outage.

7) It is important if your power is out to conserve the energy left in your freezer and refrigerator. You can do this by limiting the times you open and close them. Dry ice is also available for purchase at local groceries if you are able to get out.

8) Of course if the power outage comes at a time of extreme cold you can store food in a cooler outside.

9) In cold weather you will want to make sure that you leave the water dripping to avoid pipes from freezing.

10) Warm clothes should be worn. Use caution with fireplaces and never use flammable liquids to start a fire. It is also important that you never use a gas stove to heat your home. This practice is unsafe and can result in more damage.

11) It is important that if storm damage occurs and you are without power that you use care and caution in running generators.

It is important to note that after a storm you should immediately restock your emergency supplies. It is likely that the season of storms is upon you and that it won't be the last one through your area. Storm damage cannot be prevented but it can be managed. Your reaction in the situation will likely determine how well you cope with the difficulties that come along with the aftermath of storm damage.

Why You Should Hire Professionals for Your Fire Damage Repair

4/12/2019 (Permalink)

As a homeowner, there are few things that are worse than being hit by a fire. The damage that can be caused by a flood or other disasters are less when compared with that caused by fires. With other forms of disasters you can still do some repair, but with a fire the damage could be total, even if you are lucky enough to escape with your life.

Even if the fire that affected you was not a full blown one, the damage and trouble that it could cause can still be substantial. It is also not easy to repair the damage that it can cause. It presents some complications that makes handling it rather difficult.

Why Fire Damage is Difficult to Take Care of- As mentioned, a fire causes some damage that are particularly tricky to take care of. It might burn just a portion of a room, but the repair would have to involve the whole place. The smoke could also cause grime to appear on the walls and the ceiling, which could render the place a total waste.

Making use of ordinary cleaning methods will not work in removing the marks from the fire and the smoke. Leaving parts of the house that were only partially damaged by the fire can also be dangerous, since you can no longer trust its strength.

DIY Fire Damage Repair- Still, there are those who insist that they can handle the repair of the damage caused by a fire in their homes on their own. If you feel confident that you can handle it on your own, and that you have enough skill and knowledge, then go ahead and clean up your own place.

Professional for Fire Damage Repair- There is a special type of contractor that specializes in handling damages from fires and other disasters. If you are thinking of hiring someone to take care of the fire damage in your home then these specialists are the ones to go for.

Fire and Water Damage- It is not only the fire that causes the damage during a fire. The water used by the firemen to put it out can cause damage to your property and the house itself. The water can cause mold build-up which is something that you should avoid at all costs and professionals would need to have the right equipment to take care of that.

Safety- Another reason why it is beneficial for you to hire professional fire damage cleaners is your safety. When you do your own cleaning and repair on a fire damaged house you might be unable to assess if the place is already safe and you could be putting yourself in harm's way. Contractors would be able to assess the condition of a building based on their knowledge and experience.

These are just some of the reasons why you should go for hiring a contractor in order to do fire damage repair. The good news is that there are many contractors offering this type of service now. You should be careful about signing with just anyone because you have to be sure about the service that they could provide first.

Addressing Fire Damage - Simple Tips To Do To Clean Up After a Fire

4/12/2019 (Permalink)

Fire damage is undeniably one of the most dreaded problems that could be experienced by any household. It is devastating, destructive, and it leaves marks that will remind you of the fateful events. For someone who experienced fire, the safety of family and pets comes first before your personal belongings. However, fixing smoke, fire damage together with water damage is a reality that you have to deal with once the whole estate has been put off from the smoldering disaster. In such situations of damage cause be fires be it a small incident or a catastrophe, it is important to know the ways to address the problem. It could be wise to get a contractor to do the task for you but for small and isolated problems, it is also important to know what to do to dry out the place, remove the fumes and restore the area to its regular self.

Prior preparation
Before making any clean up on the affected area, be sure that the fire marshal has already given you a go signal to enter the premises. The firemen should put off all fires, even burning ash can be a reason for new fires. You might want to call your insurance company also while on the waiting stage in order to have your damage assessed and see how much the coverage will be for the damage incurred on your property. Do not move anything until the insurance people are able to take pictures to serve as evidence. If you remove something or misplace anything, it might lower the appraisal value. Check also the electrical wiring. You can hire an electrical contractor to check the wires, outlets and switches if they were affected by the fire.

Start cleaning
If you are ready to address the fire damage, get started by wearing safety products like gloves and masks. Open the windows to let the smell out and let the fresh air in. take out all items that could result to mildew build up. For the water damage, if the damage is really very minimal like the stove top only or the cabinet, use a clean, absorbent mop or cloth to dry out the excess water. If the damage is too much for a cloth use a wet vac to suck all the water effectively. Since the smoke and fire can cause they are to smell, disinfect the area.

Clothing, drapes and carpets
Smoke can leave spots on fabric and it could leave nasty odors. Take them all out and wash them with a strong detergent. This will help in removing the odors. Anything that has been burned can be thrown away.

Washing the house off
While the place is still wet, take advantage of the moisture and wash the walls with a very mild soap. This is an important method to prevent the buildup of mold and mildew. Once the whole area has been cleaned but still is mildly wet, use an air blower to dry it out fast. If you have a dehumidifier, set up the equipment to the right humidity levels and let it take the extra moisture. This will also prevent the formation of mold and mildew.

Fixing fire damage is a very serious and rigorous task but you can still do on your own if you wanted to but be sure to do it fast so that microorganisms will not thrive. It might also be necessary to get a fire and water damage restorer to recover the house in no time, make it fresh smelling again and minimize the spots that remind you of that fateful moment.

Here are some valuable prevention tips for you and your company:

29% of commercial blazes were caused by cooking equipment so you should follow manufacturers’ recommendations for maximum volt/wattage for each equipment you have in your kitchen area.

You can always ask your electrician to periodically inspect the item and outlets for potential overload in you kitchen or anywhere in your office area.

on the same topic, replace appliances that feel hot when you touch.

Most of the appliances and other equipment don't need to be plugged in when they aren't being used so unplugging them at the end of the day and weekends is a good wait to prevent fires out of business hours.

We at SERVPRO of Napa County can provide you with a FREE ERP - Emergency Ready Plan - that will help you be prepared for anything that occurs making your life easier and damages reduced.

What to do when you can't see mold

1/10/2019 (Permalink)

Mold can be found both indoor and outdoor. It can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems.  But sometimes you simply can’t find it by ordinary means, even when you nearly tear your house apart.  Mold can hide in attic insulation, in the wall cavity between drywall sheets, or between a finished basement ceiling and the floor upstairs.  If your home has a musty odor or anyone with allergies to mold seem to have more symptoms in your home, you probably have a mold problem.

Here's What to Do When You Can't See Mold:

  • Mold Testing -  If you have a mold problem somewhere in your home, you should hire a professional mold tester.  Mold tests can help you narrow down the location of hidden mold by telling you the places in your home with the highest amount of mold spores.
  • Identifying Mold Species - Simply have it identified so you know whether it’s a toxic mold or not.  This is important for toxic molds since extra caution needs to be taken to safely remove toxic mold from the home.
  • Mold Testing for Indoor Air Quality - You should have mold testing done to tell you the amount of mold spores in the air.  By testing for mold you can tell if there is an unhealthy level of spores in your house and find out if any allergies you might have are from mold.

Since mold can produce allergens and irritants, you should call SERVPRO of S.San Rafael/Sausalito to inspect your home if you suspect you have a mold problem.  We have the training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Safe Flood Clean-up Tips

1/8/2019 (Permalink)

What To Do When A Home Suffers From Storm Related Water Damage

1/8/2019 (Permalink)

When a major storm passes close to the house, the home may suffer water damage that is difficult to repair. There are many things a family can do to begin repairing any destruction, but a certified professional will likely be needed to get rid of any serious health or structural threats. Contaminated storm surges or floods can carry pathogens and become a breeding ground for mold. If allowed to fester, these mold spores can spread throughout the building and become even more difficult to remove. In many cases, governmental agencies could condemn the structure if the microbial threat is too great.

The main reason why a home is sensitive to water damage is because moisture is difficult to detect once the floods recede. Standing liquids can encourage microbial growth within 24 hours and can saturate all kinds of textiles and seep through drywall. Moisture may collect behind the walls, where mold and bacteria may multiply out of sight. If a family reacts quickly enough, clothes and furniture may be saved. However, people must be careful when entering a building that has recently been flooded. Exposure to wildlife and contaminated liquids can result in serious injury.

Before entering a home affected by water damage, make sure the electrical power is shut off. Exposed wires or plugged in devices can electrocute people, resulting in major injury or even death. Also, it’s best to move slowly through the building when re-entering it for the first time. Snakes, reptiles or rodents may be hiding under debris and could lash out and bite suddenly. To protect against wildlife and airborne contaminants, wear protective clothing from head to toe, including a vapor respirator, rubber gloves and eye protection. Also, wear thick boots that can withstand puncturing and animal bites.

Professional restoration services can quickly identify what items in the home are compromised by water damage. Normally, anything that is porous may need to be discarded if it has come in contact with contaminated fluids. These items, like mattresses, box springs, pillows and particle board, trap more moisture than other materials and foster the growth of microbes. A family can prepare for professional cleaning by getting rid of these items before the technicians arrive, but be sure to properly record and itemize the items for insurance purposes prior to disposing.

Once professionals arrive at the building, they will be able to track down any pockets of excess moisture and remove them. Certified technicians can locate these pockets of moisture using equipment that measures the moisture in hidden pockets and behind tile and other materials that may not feel wet on the outside.  When these moisture pockets are found, the technicians will expose them to air by removing any drywall or other materials in the way. Once the location of the moisture has been determined, the professionals will begin the clean-up process that may include pressure washing the area with powerful detergents. These technicians are also able to speed up the drying process to prevent the growth of any molds or other harmful bacteria. If the professional locate mold or bacteria colonies, they will know how to identify and remove the threat using chemical or mechanical methods.

It’s important for a family to hire professionals that are certified through a reputable organization. Technicians trained in this area know how to find compromised areas and do what it takes to restore them.

Napa County Smoke and Soot Cleanup

12/27/2018 (Permalink)

Storm Damage: Dealing with the Aftermath

12/27/2018 (Permalink)

Mold around the house and tips on controlling it

12/26/2018 (Permalink)

We care about your home too much to let it get full of mold. That's why SERVPRO of Napa County brought you tips to controlling and preventing growth of undesirable mold.

In the kitchen:

  • Use exhaust fans to move moisture outside (not into the attic) whenever you are cooking, washing dishes, or cleaning.
  • Turn off certain appliances if you notice moisture on windows and other surfaces.
  • Check for leaks around the kitchen sink, refrigerator ice makers, and other sources of water. Repair if necessary.
  • Empty and clean refrigerator drip pans if necessary.

In basements and crawl spaces:

  • Put a plastic cover over dirt in crawl spaces to prevent moisture from coming in from the ground. If there is standing water or the soil is wet, dry it out with fans before covering the floor.
  • Be sure crawl spaces are well ventilated by using fans and having vents installed in outside walls if necessary.
  • Consider painting concrete floors and using area rugs instead of wall-to-wall carpet in basements. If you plan to install carpet over a concrete floor, it may be necessary to use a vapor barrier (plastic sheeting) over the concrete and cover that with sub-flooring (insulation covered with plywood) to prevent a moisture problem.
  • Have your basement floor checked for leaks and have them repaired if necessary. Water can enter your home by leaking or by seeping through basement floors or walls.
  • Make sure gutters are working properly and that outdoor landscaping causes water to run away from -- not toward -- the house.
  • Do not finish basement walls with insulation and wall board unless your basement is very dry.

In the laundry room:

  • Vent your clothes dryer to the outside.
  • Make sure the vent is clear of obstructions, such as lint, and that there are no holes that leak air. If the vent duct is damaged, replace it with a metal duct. Have the duct cleaned at least once a year.
  • Avoid leaving damp clothes in the laundry basket or dryer. Wash and dry them promptly.

In bathrooms:

  • Use exhaust fans to remove moisture to the outside (not into the attic).
  • Use area rugs, which can be taken up and washed often instead of wall-to-wall carpeting.
  • Check for leaks around basins and tubs and have them repaired if necessary.
  • Open a window when showering.
  • Avoid leaving damp towels on the floor or in laundry hamper.

What not to do when you have water damage

12/26/2018 (Permalink)

Sometimes when we have a water damage situation going we want to do something in order to minimize losses. Check our other posts for more information on how to prevent and act fast. We also know it's very important to know what not to do and that's why we are bringing you this list:

  • Do not use a household vacuum to remove standing water.
  • Do not leave furniture directly on wet carpeting.
  • Do not begin to repair or repaint any damage surfaces until they are completely
    dry.
  • Do not turn ceiling fans on when the ceiling is wet.

Spotting Water Damage

12/19/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Napa County knows it and because we care about you we brought information on how to see signs of water damage in your basement of foundation. Evidence of water damage isn’t always obvious and sometimes it’s not even visible so make sure you pay attention to these signs:

  • CHANGES IN COLOR/TEXTURE OF SURFACES -  Both walls and floors can show signs of water damage.
  • CRACKING – This will usually occur in the foundation and/or floor and can happen both inside and outside the home.
  • ODOR – While basements and crawl spaces usually have a certain smell, it doesn’t necessarily mean there is a water problem. Pay attention to a strong damp, musty odor that doesn’t go away (even after a storm or wet weather). In most cases, it is mold or mildew that you smell, which means you’ve got moisture or water damage on your hands.
  • MOLD – If you can’t spot mold, you can sometimes smell it, so that’s why it’s important to pay attention to distinctive odors in the basement. Mold will appear on furniture, wood and other organic materials, walls and other surfaces either as dark green or black in color or sometimes a white powdery substance.

Preventing Water Damage

12/14/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Napa County is always here to help with you have water damage in your home or business but we also  strongly believe in prevention. Water can damage important things and make you lose valued items we nobody wants that. that's why we are bringing you some tips to help you be safe from water damage:

Causes for mold in homes

12/12/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is a type of fungus that consists of small organisms that grow but in order for it to grow it needs some conditions and we at SERVPRO of Napa County want you to be aware of it:

  • Mold spores
  • A food source (eg wood, drywall, cotton)
  • Darkness (mold can't grow under ultraviolet light)
  • Warmth (mold can't grow in freezing temperatures)
  • Oxygen
  • Moisture (eg water leaks, humidity)
  • Enough time (most molds can begin to grow in 24-48 hours if the conditions are right)

Your home has almost all the conditions for mold to grow, the only one of the list you can help control is moisture. In other words, the difference between whether mold grows in your home or not comes down to whether you have a moisture problem.

Is Cooking Dangerous?

12/6/2018 (Permalink)

The answer is NO! But cooking is the number 1 cause of fires in homes.

We all love a good meal and with the Holidays coming we hope you all have great meals coming out safe of your kitchens. We brought you information about how to be even safer.

First most fires in the kitchen are man-made, so keep an eye while in the kitchen. here are some safety tips:

House fires happen most during dinner hours—between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m.

  • For grease fires, only use a fire extinguisher (class B) or baking soda. Do not use water! It will spread the oil/grease and make your fire worse.
  • Never leave your food unattended. Fires only need 30 seconds to go from a small flame to an out-of-control blaze, so even going to the bathroom could endanger your home.
  • Turn off the stove and all appliances once you’re done cooking.
  • Keep everything off hot surfaces. For instance, don’t throw a dish towel on top of the stove, because it could still be hot!
  • Don’t wear baggy clothing. It could catch fire accidentally.
  • Keep the grill at least 10 feet from vegetation and the house.

And remember, we at SERVPRO of Napa County are here to help in case of emergency to make it "Like it never even happened."

Common Causes of Kitchen Fires

5/11/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Napa County (707) 226-2181

We can help make any fire damage you are facing and make it, "Like it never even happened!"

Test your escape plan often

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

  • Practice your home fire escape plan twice a year, making the drill as realistic as possible.
  • Make arrangements in your plan for anyone in your home who has a disability.
  • Allow children to master fire escape planning and practice before holding a fire drill at night when they are sleeping. The objective is to practice, not to frighten, so telling children there will be a drill before they go to bed can be as effective as a surprise drill.
  • It's important to determine during the drill whether children and others can readily waken to the sound of the smoke alarm. If they fail to awaken, make sure that someone is assigned to wake them up as part of the drill and in a real emergency situation.
  • If your home has two floors, every family member (including children) must be able to escape from the second floor rooms. Escape ladders can be placed in or near windows to provide an additional escape route. Review the manufacturer's instructions carefully so you'll be able to use a safety ladder in an emergency. Practice setting up the ladder from a first floor window to make sure you can do it correctly and quickly. Children should only practice with a grown-up, and only from a first-story window. Store the ladder near the window, in an easily accessible location. You don't want to have to search for it during a fire.
  • Always choose the escape route that is safest – the one with the least amount of smoke and heat – but be prepared to escape under toxic smoke if necessary. When you do your fire drill, everyone in the family should practice getting low and going under the smoke to your exit.
  • Closing doors on your way out slows the spread of fire, giving you more time to safely escape.
  • In some cases, smoke or fire may prevent you from exiting your home or apartment building. To prepare for an emergency like this, practice "sealing yourself in for safety" as part of your home fire escape plan. Close all doors between you and the fire. Use duct tape or towels to seal the door cracks and cover air vents to keep smoke from coming in. If possible, open your windows at the top and bottom so fresh air can get in. Call the fire department to report your exact location. Wave a flashlight or light-colored cloth at the window to let the fire department know where you are located.

Understanding Mold and Our Remediation Process

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

Mold has the potential to cause health effects and can spread through your property in as little as 48 hours. SERVPRO of Napa County understands mold and mold growth and has the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business.

Understanding Mold

Microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, so removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.

Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and they may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.

Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.

Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.

Let your nose lead the way. Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.

Even higher than normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

The Mold Remediation Process

Every mold damage scenario is different and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our “typical” process:

Emergency Contact - (707) 226-2181

The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask a series of questions to help us determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel.

Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment

We carefully inspect your property for visible signs of mold. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view. We use various technologies to detect mold and hidden water sources.

Mold Containment

Our professionals use various containment procedures to prevent the spread of mold. We may use advanced containment procedures like negative air chambers to isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process. All fans and heating and cooling systems will be turned off to prevent the spread of mold.

Air Filtration

Our specialized filtration equipment allows our Professionals to capture microscopic mold spores out of the air. We utilize powerful “air scrubbers” and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in process.

Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials

The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. We’ll use antifungal and antimicrobial treatments to eliminate mold colonies and to help prevent new colonies from forming. It may be necessary to remove and dispose of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and carpeting, to remediate heavy mold growth.

Cleaning Contents and Belongings

We clean your furniture, decorative items, curtains, clothing, and other restorable items affected by mold. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and disinfect your belongings. We’re also trained to remove odors and deodorization using fogging equipment.

Restoration

Depending on the level of mold damage, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may have been removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business. The restoration step gets your home or business back to normal.

Why IICRC Certified Technicians

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage can be deceptive. Water penetrates into structural cavities creating trapped pockets of saturation. The detection of water in these areas can often only be discovered with sophisticated moisture detection meters. Undetected moisture will continue to cause damage. This damage, at a minimum, will cause odors. Greater damage will surface when materials delaminate, shrink, split and further deteriorate to where costly repairs are required.

More than just removing excess water, IICRC-certified restorers have the knowledge and equipment to further dry a home or facility (including substructure materials) completely back to preloss conditions.

Upholstery Cleaning

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

Upholstery cleaning may seem easy enough to do, but if a homeowner hires a group of amateurs to do it, the results may be disastrous. Deep sanitation and debris removal can’t be done with any vacuum, so any company that shows up to the home should have all of the equipment and expertise to do the job right. The best way for a homeowner to check this is to only take on a business that is certified.

There are dozens of sanitation services in every major metro, and finding the ideal fit can take some time. This can be made easier by checking out a database that keeps track of certified upholstery cleaning organizations. The go to place for this is the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification, or IICRC. The IICRC is the agency that monitors and updates all standards within the industry. They update the guidelines to proper sanitation regularly, and any group that follows them to the letter is doing their job right.

In addition, the IICRC runs many classes every year that are aimed at companies trying to improve their craft and earn the seal of approval. An upholstery cleaning business can benefit greatly from these classes, and they are easy to schedule in, as they only require a few days to complete. For any group that wants to prove their chops, though, they are extremely important, and by completing them, a company can improve their status in the industry.

A year after an organization is certified by the IICRC, it can apply for journeyman textile sanitation status by knocking out three classes, including a mandatory upholstery cleaning course. After an additional two years, the business can reach master status by taking another two courses, one of which is for color repair. This means that a master level group of professionals can do more than just make the fabric immaculate, they can also bring it back to its former glory.

Most organizations that have these advanced marks of achievement will advertise them proudly, so finding them should be an easy task. Also, a client looking for a company can use the IICRC’s website to get some handy advice on what to look for in an organization. The site also contains a database that can locate a member in the client’s area.

Another major reason to only take on a certified business is that they are more likely to have specialists that can handle other tasks common to an upholstery cleaning group. These may include carpet sanitation, fire or water damage repair, textile repair or carpet inspection. Often, a homeowner needs several of these services at the same time, so farming them all out to one operation can reduce the price dramatically and abbreviate the time it takes to get it done.

In short, it is best to stay from companies that look amateurish and lack proper certification. Those that are trained to take care of fabrics will have a cadre of workers that have all attended courses, and are equipped with top of the line machines that are also approved by the IICRC.

House Cleaning

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

The days of a house cleaner with a mop, bucket and vacuum are over.  Today a professional is entrusted with the care of a home, its furnishings and the health of its occupants.  With the many new materials and surfaces being used in home décor, a professional house cleaner has a much broader range of knowledge than in the past as many of these newer surfaces require specialized care.

In addition to caring for the home and its contents, a professional house cleaning technician helps care for health.  This includes hygienic cleaning, effective sanitizing of surfaces, use of appropriate cleaning agents, and procedures to prevent cross contamination.  A thorough vacuuming with a high-efficiency filtration vacuum is an important contributor to improved indoor air quality.

An IICRC-certified House Cleaning Technician is trained to properly care for homes and health. A consumer who uses a certified professional can confidently trust the cleaning and relax in a clean and healthy home.

Odor Control

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

A survey commissioned by the IICRC indicates that 81 percent of U.S. homeowners agree that the health of their family is directly related to the cleanliness of floors in the home. While a key component to improving air quality is eliminating carpet and rug odors, which in many cases requires regularly cleaning these surfaces, only 15 percent clean their carpet at least once a year.

According to the IICRC, the following four-step process is the best way to successfully remove odor from your carpet:

  1. Remove the source of the odor, as practical (absorb liquids, scoop solids)
  2. Thoroughly clean odor-affected surfaces and materials. Cleaning is basic to deodorizing
  3. Treat the odor source with an appropriate odor counteractant (sanitizer, disinfectant, enzyme)
  4. Seal restorable surfaces, such as subflooring, if practical

Many sources of odor, including pet urine and tobacco smoke, require specialized procedures and techniques and are best addressed by a certified professional.

Why a Rug Cleaning Professional?

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

Sometimes vacuuming just is not enough to get the job done, and the assistance of a rug cleaning specialist is necessary. Carpet can muffle sound, prevent slipping and collect the soil and debris that would otherwise get tracked through the house. Maintaining its durability through thorough tidying is a way to ensure long lasting usefulness.

Finding someone reliable to perform a professional cleaning is not difficult when one knows what to look for. When searching for a reputable business to trust, it is important to look for one that has been operating for a number of years. This is not to say that a new business is incapable of providing quality work, but someone with a history in the field is far more likely to have the necessary skills. Obtaining information on a business that has been around for years will be easier, because they’ve had the opportunity to be critiqued by more customers. Online recommendations are helpful when deciding on a rug cleaning service, because they provide proof of excellent customer service and a job that has been satisfactorily done. While not necessary, picking a business that specializes in more than cleaning has its benefits. A company that is well versed in restoration and repair has a clear idea of how the rug should look, as well as how it is made, and all of that knowledge can be applied when inspecting and treating it. A professional business is also more likely to have the machines, soap solutions and techniques that result in a complete laundering.

A professional rug cleaning serves the purpose of removing stains, dirt, odors and allergens. There are a few different methods of achieving this, but the most common is composed of a few steps. First, remove items that are small and fragile from pieces of furniture that will need to be moved. A crew will do all the heavy lifting, but can operate more quickly and efficiently without clutter. A pre-inspection will reveal if there are any permanent stains and allow the employees to determine rug construction and materials. Jute, a natural fiber that used to be employed as a backing is known to shrink when wet, so an inspection is an important part of the process. A thorough vacuuming of the area will then be done to remove debris. Afterwards, a pre-spray and spot treatment will be applied before a machine-mounted hot water extraction is performed.  The hot water extraction sprays water that has its heat and pressure carefully regulated to prevent floor coverings from getting sopping wet. This method flushes the carpet with a diluted cleaning agent that removes bonded dirt and grit. The hot water extraction machine sucks up the water immediately after spraying it, and this is performed front to back. Afterwards, there is a post-spot treatment to tend to any trouble spots. Then the floor covering is raked to encourage faster drying and to be more aesthetically pleasing.

A rug cleaning that will restore floor coverings to their former softness and vibrancy is not a do-it-yourself task, but a job for a professional. Only through hiring a professional can the best, most effective and safest rug cleaning solutions and methods be guaranteed.

Sewage Back-ups Tips

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

Sewage is one of the most dangerous substances to enter homes or buildings. It contains fungi, bacteria and viruses, many of which are disease-causing. Unfortunately, many people fail to understand the hazards that sewage presents, particularly for the very young or very old, or for those with compromised immune systems or respiratory problems.

The IICRC complied guidelines for professional sewage clean-up called the Standard for Water Damage Restoration (S500).

Here are the key principles homeowners should know about sewage back-ups:

  • Sewage contains a variety of pathogenic – disease causing – fungi, bacteria, viruses and parasites. Anyone who works on sewage losses must have updated vaccinations, including one for Hepatitis B.
  • Sewage exposure is particularly dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, including anyone under two or over 60, those who are pregnant, ill, recovering from surgery, on prescription drugs or chemotherapy, or are AIDS victims.
  • It is not safe to stay in a building that’s flooded with sewage unless the contaminated area can be completely sealed off and placed under controlled air flow so that there will be no cross contamination of unaffected areas.
  • Highly absorbent sewage-saturated materials, such as carpet, pad, upholstery, bedding, wicker, paper or even fabrics that can’t be washed in hot water (130°F/54°C) for at least 10 minutes, must be contained and disposed of properly.  This goes for sewage-saturated drywall, insulation and several other structural materials too.  There’s simply too great a health risk involved if any of these materials are dried in place and cleaned only.
  • Only the most highly trained professionals should attempt sewage remediation work. Then, a “third party” indoor environmental professional can provide post-remediation verification or “clearance testing” to ensure that the home or building is safe to re-occupy.

FIRE SAFETY IN MANUFACTURED HOMES

6/6/2017 (Permalink)

About manufactured homes
Manufactured homes (sometimes called "mobile" homes) are transportable structures that are fixed to a chassis and specifically designed to be towed to a residential site. They are not the same as modular or prefabricated homes, which are factory-built and then towed in sections to be installed at a permanent location.

In order to distinguish between modular, prefabricated and recreational trailer homes, the following definition for a manufactured home from NFPA 501, Standard on Manufactured Housing, applies:

A structure, transportable in one or more sections that in the traveling mode is 8 body-ft (2.4 m) or more in width or 40 body-ft (12.2 m) or more in length or that on site is 320 ft2 (29.7m2) or more, is built on a permanent chassis, is designed to be used as a dwelling with or without a permanent foundation, whether or not connected to the utilities, and includes plumbing, heating, air-conditioning, and electrical systems contained therein. Such terms shall include any structure that meets all the requirements of this paragraph except the size requirements and with respect to which the manufacturer voluntarily files a certification required by the regulatory agency. Calculations used to determine the number of square feet in a structure are based on the structure’s exterior dimensions, include all expandable rooms, cabinets, and other projections containing interior space, but do not include bay windows.

The federal government regulates the construction of manufactured housing. Since 1976, manufactured homes have been required to comply with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) manufactured housing construction and safety standards, which cover a wide range of safety requirements, including fire safety. Post-1976 manufactured homes bear a label certifying compliance with these standards.

The HUD standard has been enhanced over the years and the HUD "Final Rule" for smoke alarms in manufactured homes is largely based upon NFPA 501. Today, new construction of manufactured housing is required to contain, among other provisions:

  • factory installed hard wired or 10 year battery source, interconnected smoke alarms with battery back-up (including alarms inside or immediately adjacent to all rooms designated as sleeping areas, top of the stairs and on the basement ceiling near the stairs)
  • provisions for special devices for hearing and visually impaired persons.

NFPA's national fire data indicate that manufactured homes built to HUD standards (post-1976 construction) have a much lower risk of death if fire occurs compared to pre-standard manufactured homes. The latest data (2007-2011) also shows that the overall fire death rate per 100,000 housing units is roughly the same for manufactured homes and for other one- or two-family homes.

Despite the federal requirements for factory-installed smoke alarms and the fact that eight out of ten manufactured homes now are and seven out of ten manufactured home fires now involve post-HUD-Standard units (based on 2007-2011 data), 51 percent of fires in manufactured homes were reported as having no smoke alarms present. This suggests a problem with detection devices being removed by occupants.

Safety tips
To increase fire safety in manufactured homes, NFPA offers the following guidelines:

  • Choose a HUD-certified manufactured home
If you are in the market to purchase or rent a manufactured home, select a home built after 1976 that bears the HUD label certifying compliance with safety standards.
  • Keep smoke alarms working
Never remove or disable a smoke alarm. If you experience frequent nuisance alarms, consider relocating the alarm further away from kitchen cooking fumes or bathroom steam. Selecting a photoelectric smoke alarm for the areas nearest kitchens and baths may reduce the number of nuisance alarms experienced. As an alternative, NFPA 501 permits a smoke alarm with a silencing means to be installed if it is within 20 feet of a cooking appliance. Test all smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the "test" button. It is not necessary to use smoke or a real flame to test the smoke alarm's operability, and it is risky to do so. Replace batteries at least once a year, and when the alarm "chirps," signaling low battery power. Occasionally dust or lightly vacuum smoke alarms.
  • Make sure you have enough smoke alarms
If your older manufactured home does not have smoke alarms in or near every sleeping room and in or near the family/living area(s), immediately install new alarms and fresh batteries to protect these rooms.  For the best protection, interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.
  • Plan your escape
Know ahead of time how you will get out if you have a fire. Develop an escape planwhich includes having an alternate exit out of every room. Make sure you can open and get out of windows and doors. All post-HUD Standard manufactured homes are required to provide windows designed for use as secondary escape routes for the bedroom. Familiarize yourself with their operation and don't block access to them.  Immediately fix any windows that have been painted or nailed shut, doors that are stubborn or "stuck," and locks that are difficult to operate. Security bars or grates over windows or doors should have quick-release devices installed inside, which allow you to open them in an emergency. Hold a fire drill twice a year to rehearse how you will react if the smoke alarm sounds.
  • Electrical
Hire a licensed electrician if you notice flickering lights, frequent blown circuits, or a "hot" smell when using electricity. Use extension cords for temporary convenience, not as a permanent solution. Avoid overloading electrical receptacles (outlets). Electrical cords should not be run under carpets or rugs, as the wires can be damaged by foot traffic, then overheat and ignite the carpet or rug over them. Ground-fault circuit interrupters reduce the risk of electrical shock and should be installed by electricians in kitchens and baths. Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters monitor electric circuits for arcing and should be installed by electricians on bedroom circuits.
  • Cooking
Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires in U.S. homes. Supervise older children who cook and stay in the kitchen when heating anything on the stove. Keep cooking surfaces clean and place anything that can burn well away from the range. Heat oil slowly and know how to slide a lid over a pan if you experience a grease fire. Read more cooking safety tips.
  • Heating
Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn. When purchasing new space heaters, select appliances with automatic shut-off switches. Kerosene heaters are illegal for home use in some jurisdictions. Check with your local fire department before purchasing a kerosene heater. Turn off portable space heaters before falling asleep or when leaving the room. Refill kerosene heaters outdoors, after the heater has cooled down. Supervise children and pets when space heaters are operating. Read more heating safety tips.
  • Walls
All post-HUD Standard manufactured homes are required to have wall linings that do not promote rapid flame spread, with special protection around primary heating and cooking equipment, such as the furnace and cooking range. Presently, gypsum wallboard has replaced plywood wall paneling and wood based ceiling panels in the fabrication of manufactured housing walls and ceilings. This action has dramatically reduced the impact of fires in manufactured homes. Do not mount anything on the walls – such as paneling, drapery, or wall hangings – that would reduce this protection, especially near major heat sources.
  • Smoking
If you have smokers in your home, ask them to smoke outside. Wherever people smoke, set out large, non-tip ashtrays on level surfaces and empty them frequently. Thoroughly douse butts with water before discarding. Check around and under cushions for smoldering butts. Read more smoking safety tips.
  • Protect yourself from intruders
Install outdoor lighting to deter intruders, including would-be arsonists. Keep gasoline, charcoal lighter and other flammable liquids locked in an outdoor shed. Don't store items underneath your home. Store firewood away from your home and keep trash and other flammable debris cleaned up. Report any suspicious activity in your neighborhood.

Pet Fire Safety Tips

6/6/2017 (Permalink)

Family Escape Plan

6/6/2017 (Permalink)

  • Pull together everyone in your household and make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes.  Households with children should consider drawing a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of each room, including windows and doors. Also, mark the location of each smoke alarm. This is a great way to get children involved in fire safety in a non-threatening way.
  • A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code® requires interconnected smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.
  • Everyone in the household must understand the escape plan. When you walk through your plan, check to make sure the escape routes are clear and doors and windows can be opened easily.
  • Choose an outside meeting place (i.e. neighbor's house, a light post, mailbox, or stop sign) a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they've escaped. Make sure to mark the location of the meeting place on your escape plan.
  • Go outside to see if your street number is clearly visible from the road. If not, paint it on the curb or install house numbers to ensure that responding emergency personnel can find your home.
  • Have everyone memorize the emergency phone number of the fire department. That way any member of the household can call from a neighbor's home or a cellular phone once safely outside.
  • If there are infants, older adults, or family members with mobility limitations, make sure that someone is assigned to assist them in the fire drill and in the event of an emergency. Assign a backup person too, in case the designee is not home during the emergency.
  • If windows or doors in your home have security bars, make sure that the bars have emergency release devices inside so that they can be opened immediately in an emergency. Emergency release devices won't compromise your security - but they will increase your chances of safely escaping a home fire.
  • Tell guests or visitors to your home about your family's fire escape plan. When staying overnight at other people's homes, ask about their escape plan. If they don't have a plan in place, offer to help them make one. This is especially important when children are permitted to attend "sleepovers" at friends' homes.
  • Be fully prepared for a real fire: when a smoke alarm sounds, get out immediately. Residents of high-rise and apartment buildingsmay be safer "defending in place."
  • Once you're out, stay out! Under no circumstances should you ever go back into a burning building. If someone is missing, inform the fire department dispatcher when you call. Firefighters have the skills and equipment to perform rescues.

Grill Safety

6/5/2017 (Permalink)

With the weather growing warmer and grilling becoming the cooking method of choice for many people it becomes crucial to remember grilling on Charcoal grills and or gas grills can present a variety of safety hazards. So before you heat up your grill, here's a few tips on grilling safely.

Grill Placement

Never use your grill indoors, in a garage, or under anything that could catch fire.

Place your grill at least ten feet away from your home, or any other structures or buildings.

Keep a spray bottle and fire extinguisher nearby at all times.

Charcoal Grill Safety

Make sure you use your grill in an open space. Charcoal grills burn off dangerous carbon monoxide gas that builds up in closed areas.

Never use any flammable or combustible liquid to start the fire. These starter fluids could cause an uncontrollable flash fire; add more charcoal or use kindling instead.

After grilling, allow charcoals to cool completely, soak them in water, and then store or dispose them in a metal container so they don't reignite.

Gas Grill Safety

  1. Follow the grill manufacturer’s instructions and keep written materials handy.
  2. If the igniter no longer works, replace it in accordance with the grill manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Keep the top of the grill open until you are sure the grill is lit, even if you have an electronic ignition. 4. Cover disconnected hose-end fittings with plastic bags or protective caps to keep them clean when the grill is not in use.
  4. Store propane cylinders outdoors in an upright (vertical) position.
  5. If you smell gas, and it is safe to do so, turn off the cylinder valve, turning it to the right (clockwise). If you are unable to turn off the valve, immediately leave the area and dial 911 or call your local fire department. Before you use the grill again, have a qualified service technician inspect your grill and cylinder.
  6. Consult a qualified service technician if you are having grill or propane cylinder problems.
  7. Keep your grill clean to prevent flare-ups.
  8. Check for knots or kinks in gas hoses.
  9. Make sure the area around the grill is free of leaves or anything else that could ignite.

DON’T

  1. Smoke while handling a propane cylinder.
  2. Use matches or lighters to check for propane leaks.
  3. Pour an accelerant such as lighter fluid or gasoline on the grill.
  4. Allow children to tamper with the cylinder or grill.
  5. Use, store, or transport propane cylinders near high temperatures (this includes storing spare cylinders near the grill).
  6. Transport propane cylinders in your trunk. Instead, keep in a cool place, such as an air-conditioned car.
  7. Move a lit grill.
  8. Leave a lit grill unattended.
  9. Attempt to adjust any gas containers or hoses while the grill is lit.
  10. Grill in a covered patio or garage, even with the doors open, because gases can build up.

Maintenance and Personal Safety

Check your grill frequently for cleanliness. Make sure no animals or bugs have crawled inside.

Don't allow fat and grease to buildup. A hot grill can ignite fat and grease and start a fire.

These simple steps may be able to prevent you from having to deal with a home fire started by your grill. If disaster were to strike SERVPRO of Napa County stands ready and is Always Here to Help.

Does Your Napa Home Have A Mold Problem?

6/5/2017 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Helpful tips to Prepare for a Water Damage

6/5/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Restoration Is The First Step Towards Tomorrow

5/11/2017 (Permalink)

When smoke and flames consume a residence, trying to pick up the pieces and return to a normal life may seem like an impossible task. Fire damage restoration is the all-important first step in the process of rebuilding the structure and making it a livable space once again. The process of remediation after this kind of loss is time-sensitive and involves a number of steps. Finding a professional organization to perform this process can lessen financial stress and help property owners return to the home that they love.

Time Is Of The Essence

Fire damage restoration is a time-sensitive process. The passage of time will increase the impact in terms of the harm to property and belongings and the cost to return them to their former state. The initial impact of the flames is obvious; charred items show the results of the event. Water and chemical agents that were used to tamp down and contain the event also leave behind traces of how they were applied. However, there are other elements, less apparent but no less critical, that can dramatically increase the level of harm that has occurred.

The residual effects following a combustible event begin within minutes of the flames being doused and the smoke being cleared. Soot, ash, and odors can combine to discolor surfaces; corrode metallic objects, such as appliances and plumbing fixtures; and permanently stain fabrics, such as clothing and upholstery. As time passes, the long-term impact can be felt both in financial and emotional terms. Beginning the recovery process as soon as possible will help reduce the cost and the time required to begin a return to normalcy.

What Is Involved

A professional fire damage restoration team follows a number of steps in achieving the goal of returning the affected property to its former state. Below are highlights of this process.

Securing The Site

After a professional team is called to a location and performs an initial assessment, the location will be secured from the elements. This may involve windows and damaged walls being boarded up. If there is damage to the roof of a structure, a roof tarp may also be installed to prevent the elements from causing additional harm. It is important to note that protective clothing is utilized during the entire operation as team members can be exposed to potentially harmful elements that resulted from the occurrence.

Initial Removal Of Flame Retardant Items

Water and chemical agents used to control the event need to be removed from the location before additional work can be performed. Drying elements, such as dehumidifiers, are brought in to expedite the process. Large fans and other air moving devices will improve ventilation and make the area both easier and safer to perform the remediation.

Removing And Cleaning

The next phase of the procedure involves removing the residual soot and smoke odors from the premises. This is one of the most comprehensive steps, as it involves a thorough cleaning of all surfaces including walls, ceilings, floors, fixtures, and appliances. During this time, additional estimates can be made as to what can be restored and what must be replaced.

Sanitizing and deep cleaning will help bring items back to the condition that they were in before being damaged in the event. This step can also result in significant cost savings both to the homeowner and the insurance company involved.

Restoration And Replacement

The final step in fire damage restoration is dealing with any structural damage. Installing new flooring, repainting, and similar activities will be undertaken at this time. If portions of the property need to be rebuilt, this can also be completed during this phase.

Items such as appliances and fixtures that are too impacted to be restored will be replaced with new functional equivalents so that the property can once again be a home to those who lived there.

Powering Through the Fire Damage Restoration Process

5/2/2017 (Permalink)

Your home is partially damaged in a blaze, but fortunately, you will be able to move back in. Undergoing professional fire damage restoration will save you from having to figure out how to dry carpets, drapery, and furniture, remove soot, and repair structural damage. During this tumultuous time, you and your family will be able to take control by following these tips.

Names and Contact Information

Get a folder and a notebook and be prepared to hoard everything related to the fire. Write down the name and contact information of every helpful person you encounter. Continue using the notebook to track financial transactions and conversations with insurance representatives, contractors, and all other related interactions. Be sure to write the date, time, full name, subject, and next steps for each conversation. Put the business cards, reports, forms, contracts, etc. you receive in the folder. Knowing the status of all aspects of recovery will help you feel powerful in a time of despair.

Let People Know About Your Situation

When family and friends hear the news, they will want to help! Tell them what you need and be specific. If your clothing is not salvageable, let them see the specific sizes and types you want. Many people use crowdfunding websites to arrange donations and tell their stories. Some choose registries that allow people to purchase specific items. Use pictures of the damage to show the need. The more your loved ones know, the better they can direct support.

Don't forget to keep track of donations so you can follow up with a Thank You when you are back on your feet. You will also want to arrange a storage space for donated items while you wait to move home.

Temporary Housing

If you do not have anywhere to stay while your home is undergoing fire damage restoration, reach out to local hotels to see if they offer free nights for fire survivors. Take advantage of emergency and recovery organizations. They will help you access a web of connections and available necessities.

Salvaging Keepsakes

You've survived physically unharmed, but what about your belongings? When fire damage restoration professionals allow you to enter your home, you will want to find and remove the most treasured items. After photo-documenting everything you can safely approach, remove the items you want to keep in large plastic bags.

When you find documents that are wet and stuck together, float them in a tub of water to separate them. Follow up by hanging to dry or laying out on a flat surface.

Clothing and furniture that may be smoke damaged should be checked by your fire damage restoration consultants to help you decide whether to keep or toss them. You can treat smoke-scented clothing by soaking and washing in a mixture of water and vinegar.

Make Your Claim

After you have photographed your home, make a list of everything you have lost. Think of your house room by room to make sure you are not missing anything. Work with your family to ensure all perspectives are included. Create a table that includes the name, value, approximate date purchased, and retailer for each item. It is preferable to do this in digital form so you can update easily and share with your insurance agent.

How To Choose A Rug Cleaning Service

3/20/2017 (Permalink)

When looking for a rug cleaning service, people should figure out how every company approaches treatment before they settle on one. Precious rugs can be uniquely put together, and many feature a one of a kind design. And though they are tough, they can be worn down and damaged by soil if they are not cleaned promptly. That’s a serious problem for these pieces as they tend to act like dirt sponges in the house. They are capable of soaking up all kind of soil, to the point where the rug may weigh significantly more due to the added burden of dirt and debris.

What should a homeowner look for in a rug cleaning service?

It’s best for a homeowner to know what kind of training and education a technician has before handing such a precious item over. There are many companies that have no formal training or education and are instead relying on techniques that have been passed down by an experienced professional. While there is nothing wrong with passing on practical skills, technicians should also have formal training backing them. This is the only way to eliminate gaps in knowledge, and the only way to ensure a professional is up to date on their skills and techniques.

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is among the industry organizations that offers a course for these professionals. Known as the Rug Cleaning Technician (RCT) course, the IICRC’s class focusing on both theory and application and teaches a variety of methods to remove soils from the piece. Students will also learn the limits of treatment and how to inspect the fibers for more serious damage, so a professional can accurately assess what can be cleaned and what will require more thorough effort.

During an IICRC course, students are also introduced to the latest treatment equipment and methods, so certified technicians have the latest tools at their disposal when taking on a job. That should be reassuring to rug owners, especially because IICRC certified professionals are also expected to uphold a rigorous ethical standard. Negligent or reckless treatment of the rug can result in permanent damage, so a homeowner must be able to trust the company in charge of the job.

Before choosing a rug cleaning service, homeowners will also want to choose a company that has the proper facilities. It takes a surprising amount of space to treat rugs. Of course, space is needed to lay the piece out and inspect it, but there also needs to be room for heavy duty vacuuming and application of cleansing agents, as well as space for an immersion bath, drying centrifuge, and plenty of hanging racks. These are all accepted treatment techniques that professionals use, so a homeowner should visit the business and see what equipment they have on hand, as this will suggest the methods of treatment available.

Still, an IICRC certified professional is the focus, as these technicians will often work the hardest to preserve their reputation in the field and elevate their level of service.
